D., Dec. 11.—(P)—Admit- ting that he testified falsely Thurs- day, Arthur (Chief) Barenson Friday voluntarily took the witness stand in federal court and gave a full account of the liquor truck episode in Fargo on March 30, 1930, in the trial of Lee Dillage, Lignite, and Ed. Madison, for- mer Fargo police chief, charged with liquor law violations. Judge Andrew Miller late Thurs- day ordered Barenson committed to the Cass county jail in default of|* * $10,000 bond on a perjury charge. Barenson, who pleaed guilty in fed- eral court here on Nov. 30, to a charge of setting up and operating a still near Casselton from which, it is claimed much of the liquor which fig- ured in the Fargo case, was called Thursday as a government witness to testify against Dillage and Madison. Under direct examination by Usher L. Burdick, assistant district attorney, Barenson denied he knew Eddie Mor- ris of Minot, on March 30, 1930, the day Morris and Dillage are charged with transporting a truck load of liquor through Fargo. Madison is charged with aiding the liquor laden truck to pass on its way after an ex- amination. Banenson answred “I don’t: remem- ber,” to a majority of the questions put to him Burdick. Morris, who was’ charged jointly ‘with Madison and Dillage and was convicted in federal court in Grand Forks last year and now is under sen- tence of five years in Leavenworth, ‘was one of the principal witnesses for tthe government, He was one of the 11 witnesses called by the government in its at- tempt to complete a chain of evidence} ' ‘with which to convict Dillage and]; ‘Madison. | ° . * Singer Disappears; Leaves Suicide Note New York, Dec. 11.—(?)—Santo Biondo, lyric soprano, was to have sung the role of Manuela in “La Not- te Di Zoraima” Thursday night but she failed to appear at the Metropol- itan Opera house. Mme. Biondo's teacher, Enrico} Rosati, said he had received two let- ters from the singer in which she threatened suicide. One of them said: i “I have lived a life of lies. I have down by the stove and turned on the gas jets. But I couldn't go through with it. So now I have decided to end my life in the waters.” Police went to her apartment and found it in disorder. The lights were on, the windows open and clothing ‘was all over the floor. Biondo was last seen late Wednes- gay night she walked out-of her partment hotel with several letters in_ hand, Mario Biondo, a brother, said she had been depressed over losses on the stock market. She also was up- set by the recent illness of her father. is Armour Creameries (Bis-|! D., Dec. — (AP) — Political feeling sur- rounding the’ University of North Dakota elections for class officers, scheduled for Friday, rose to such a height on the campus Thursday night that the Dakota Student, campus news- paper, was under armed police guard as it went to press. Police were called by E. K. Smiley, dean of men, following a meeting of the board in control of student publications, at which several staff members of the paper protested its use as an organ of the cgalition party, one of the factions seeking to elect a ticket in the balloting. 3 Tt was feared a delegation of students, not on the staff, might break into the university print- ing plant and take charge of the publication. Trouble started following the printing of: a political: story in last Tuesday's. issue which lead- ers of the indeperident party charged was biased in favor .of their opponents.
