6 SHOWN IN PICTURE ‘Four Horsemen’ and Carideo Among Stars in ‘Spirit of Notre Dame’ Football is spiced with romance in “The Spirit of Notre Dame” feature production which will open Monday at the Capitol Theater. But the romance, interesting as it is, is only incidental. The film of- fers all interested in the subject an opportunity to get a close-up view; of the thrills, the action—and above all the background—of the gridiron’ teams which have made Notre Dame famous in recent years. And over the entire theme there hangs the shadow of one of the great- est figures American sport has pro- duced, that of Knute Rockne who gained renown, not only as a great} footbail coach and a master football} strategist, but as a moulder and mak- | er of men. To the thousands of football fans in the Bismarck territory the picture will carry its own appeal, for the men who star in it are real footbaii players. To begin with, there are Stuhldre- her, Layden, Crowley and Miller, the famous Four Horsemen of 1924.{ Thousands can testify that they knew their pigskin. And backing up this formidable quartet is Frank Carideo, all-American quarterback in 1929 and 1930, ‘Moon’ Mullins, Bucky O'Con- nor, John Law and other Notre Dame football greats. They are football players in a real foctball picture. In addition, the story which runs through the picture is an interesting one and the setting is authentic. Since the name of a well-known institution is used in the title and the picture presumes to portray the atmosphere which prevails there, it was necessary for the college officials to be satis- fied. They have given the produc- tion their approval. Some of the most dramatic inci- dents in the recent history of sport are reproduced in the picture with @ reality which is startlingly vivid. In addition, the public is given an insight into the things which made a football team great. There is, for instance. the case of Marty Brill. Brill, it will be remembered, never had made a touchdown for Notre’ Dame, although he had been one of the first-string backfield men for sev- eral seasons. Then, when Notre Dame was playing at Philadelphia,| Brill’s home town, he turned loose and made a whole flock of them, just to| give the home-town folks a treat. How this was done and why is ex-) plained in the picture. The fact of) the matter was that Brill, ordinarily, wasn’t expected to make touchdowns. | His job was to do the blocking and; help the other players make the scores. At Philadelphia, Rockne gave! the great back a break and made an-; other player do the second fiddling for that one contest. There are some other folks in the picture, of course. For instance, there is Lew Ayres, who does his footballing without becoming a star, and Sally Blane, who helps to provide the heart interest. J. Farrell McDonald also has the fat part of Knute Rockne among those members of the movie colony who took part in the production, > ¢ } ° Christiana By VIOLET A.
