PRESBYTERIANSTO | HOLD MEETING HERE More Than a Score From 19 Western Counties Expected In City Next Tuesday More than a score of representatives from 25 churches in 19 western North Dakota counties are expected in Bis- marck next Tuesday to attend the stated fall meeting of the Bismarck presbytery of the Presbyterian church. Rev. N. S. Johnson, Bismarck, Sun- day School missionary for the presby- tery, will open the session at 10 a. m. in the First Presbyterian church. Routine business will occupy the at- tention of the delegates. i Wednesday the members of the presbytery will journey to Devils Lake | to attend the 44th annual meeting of the Synod of North Dakota of the Presbyterian church. The state meet- ing will be in session Oct. 14, 15, and 16. To Experiment With Refrigeration Plant A refrigeration plant with four com- partments which will be used for pathological studies of disease of wheat, flax, potatoes, fruits and vege- tables is being installed in the new green house at North Dakota Agri- cultural college, according to Dr. P. F. ‘Trowbridge, director of the agricul- tural experiment station. The studies will be under the direct supervision of w. E. Brentzel, plant pathologist. One compartment of the refriger- ation plant will be set at zero, one at 32 degrees, one at 45 degrees and one at 60 degrees. In this manner “old man weather” will be duplicated close- ly, states Brentzel. Each of the com- partments will be adjustable to other temperatures at the will of the oper- ator, however. Wheat smut is likely to be the first studied. Samples of the grain will be! placed in pots and then into the com- partment set around 45 degrees. At this low temperature, which is much lower than ordinary room tempera- ture, the common wheat ‘smut gets a chance to incubate. The smut fails Say Endless Circle Operated by Foshay| Minneapolis, Oct. 9 —(#)— Opera- tions of W. B. Foshay enterprises Fri- day were described as centering about “an endless, vicious circle of selling more stocks to raise more money to pay more dividends in order to sell more stock” by Fred Horowitz, special assistant attorney general. He declared representations that the operations were soundly managed, af- fording safe, conservative investment opportunities were “dishonest preten- sions,” in addressing the jury which today ended its seventh week of hear- ing the trial of the promoter and six associates on mail fraud charges. While the prosecutor fired charges of dishonesty, fraud, and bad faith at the defendents in the third day of his appeal to the panel, Foshay continued’ to simile, listening closely to the argu- ments. , His aides, co-defendants, were sober. faced. University Will Not Publish Annual Book Grand Forks, N. D., Oct. 9—In ac-; cordance with the rigid economy pro- gram adopted by all departments in the University of North Dakota, mem- bers of the junior class have decided that the Dacotah, annual publication sponsored by the class, should not be} published this year. “This is a move in the right direc- | tion,” said E. Kenneth Smiley, dean of men, in discussing the action. “We are doing our utmost to hold expenses for each student to a minimum this year. By foregoing the publication of an annual this year, each junior will save at least the $4 which he would have to pay for his copy of the book even if no special assessment to make up @ deficit should become neces- sary.” i That the publication may not be permanently dropped, plans are be- ing made to publish the Dacotah every other year as is done in some of the larger schools, according to Gilbert Stewart, Mandan, who was to have edited the book this year.
