I am telling you—I believe there are 100,- 000 places in New York where liquor is sold and 500,000 people are inter-) ested in these places. But now many \of ’em aren’t even making a living.” Tzzy believes New York state would go dry if a vote were taken. He be- lieves the nation is overwhelmingly tary. He points to his own Ghetto as an example. _ Better Now “Look,” he says. “In the old days} FRECKLES AND HIS FRIENDS _ Atta Boy, Bob! SPAY, BOB...RILEY'S LOST SOMEWHERE here in the east side. You see, they are dressed better. They have shoes. The Izzy doesn’t believe he will go back into the prohibition service again. Of course he doesn't really know, for he hasn't made a decision, but he is probably out for all time. He worked for nearly seven years, starting after passing of the 18th amendment when being an agent was a novelty, Izzy never carried a revolver, not) even when he knew he might meet desperate men. He says now he still believes it isn’t necessary for prohi- bition agents to be armed. In fact, he insisted, when he was raiding in Texas, that officers who accompanied him park their weapons at home. Close Shave Only once was Izzy really face to face with death. That happened! \WHAT.KIND OF ]7 COUNTRY Does HE f I THousHT-HE »| When he and his partner, Moe Smith, wearing disguises of old clothes,| strolled into a Yonkers saloon and ,|bought liquor. Although they did not know it, the bartender had been held up two days before. As soon as they had the “evidence,” they rushed behind the bar and started for the liquor stocks. The bar- tender pulled a revolver, aimed it and was just ready to shoot when, Izzy yc|cTied out that they were Izzy’ and Moe. The bartender’s finger trem- bled on the trigger, but he hesitated and they were able to prove they ;|were prohibition agents, not holdup men. “Never had any real trouble,” de- clares Izzy. “Gave everybody a square deal and didn’t pull any rough stuff. | That was my policy.” Izzy's five sons look as if they would all be as plump as he. The oldest just graduated from Brooklyn Law college and has taken bar exam- inations. “Can't keep the Einsteins away, from the bars,” says Izzy, chuckling. Izzy is content. If his ordinary work-a-day life bores him he can al- ways refer to his scrap books, holding clippings about his exploits in every state in the union. They will recall exciting days.
