Giant Parade and Old | Settlers Picnic — Sept. 2nd - LACK OF CLOTHING MAY KEEP CHILDREN AWAY FROM SCHOOL Workers Get Poor Response to/ Appeals for Old Clothing to Relieve Situation A number of Burleigh county chil-! dren are faced with the prospect of staying away from school this winter for lack of proper clothing, Mrs. F. L. Conklin, chairman of the Bi eig county chapter of the Red Cross, Saturday. Unless relief measures can be ef- fected immediately, they must sit at home while other, more fortunate children are reaping the benefits of education. Volunteer women workers have set up an organization to make over old clothing into wearable children's gar- ments, but are handicapped by the Meager response to appeals for ma-| terials, Mrs. Conklin said. Heretofore, when appeals for old clothing have becn made, the com- munity has responded quickly and generously, according to relief work- ers, who are at a loss to understand | the lack of contributions now. Feeling that there may be persons who would like to contribute, but who are unaware of the enter- prise, the relief organization Saturday made a second appeal to the public. ‘They ask the women of Bismarck to ransack basements, attics, and closets for materials that might be converted inte children’s apparel. Women. who can sew and who are interested in helping the poor have been asked to donate their services at the committee work rooms at the World War Memorial building where workers are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays to assist in the project. ‘The rooms are kept open from 10 a. m, to § p. m. and sewing machines have been secured for their conven- ience. Persons wishing to donate clothing have been asked to deliver their con- tributions to the work rooms at the Memorial building or to communicate with Mrs. C. E. Stackhouse, chairman of the committee on collections, who will arrange for their delivery.
