Navy's new Akron, mightiest of the world’s great air- ships, which is to be christened by Mrs. Hoover at Akron, O., on Aug. 8. Previous stories have told of the size of this great $5,- 000,000 Zeppelin and of the safety measures taken during construction to preclude the pos- sibility of another disaster like that of the Shenandoah. By ISRAEL KLEIN (Copyright 1931, NEA Service, Inc.) ‘Akron, ©. Aug. 4.—Launching of the U. 8. 8, Akron here will mark the end of a series of exacting con- structional tests and the beginning of a new series of operation tests de- signed to prove the complete safety of Uncle Segn's sky dreadnaught. These operation tests will deter- mine whether world’s greatest airship One of these flights will be made over a predetermined route and for @ very limited distance, to determine such things as the turning qualities of the ship and its maneuverability, or how easily it responds to the va- rious controls. In another flight the amount of dynamic lift will be ascertained, that, is, the load which the ship can carry under the power of its motors and beyond the lift furnished by its buoy- ant gas. Another flight will enable the engi- neers to determine the rate at which the ship will be able to ascend. Here the new type of propéllers, which tilt from horizontal to vertical position, will be tested under various condi- tions. Finally, a special speed trial flight will be made over a specified route. In this, as well as in other of the flight tests, the motors will be tried out in various combinations, some of them being kept idle at times while the rest are made to propel the ship forward or backward. At other times, all the eight motors, with a total of 4,500 horsepower, will push the huge Zeppelin to its utmost. really answers to the specifications ‘Safe’ Gas Used in All U. S. Airship Helium, by-product of natural gas wells in Texas and Oklahoma, is the lifting gas for American's airships. Although it is not as efficient as hydrogen, the lightest gas obtainable, it has its advantage over hydrogen in being non-in- flammable. A thousand cubic feet of this gas will lift 69.6 pounds, making the available lift of the 6,500,000 cubic foot Akron about 450,000 pounds. The 6,500,000 cubic foot helium- inflated Akron is equal in capacity to a 5,000,000 cubic foot hydrogen- filled airship. and designs of the engineers who built it. First will come the dock tests, or shed trials, which will be made be- fore the Akron is allowed to leave its dock. Next will be a series of trial flights in which the ship will be maneuvered under certain specific conditions pre- pared by the engineers. “In the dock,” explains Dr. Karl Arnstein, designer of the Akron, “our chief purpose will be to determine the agreement of our stress calcu- lations with actual stresses on the ship. We shall do this by bending the ship first up and then ¥ This will be done ‘by concentrating loads on both ends in order to bend her down and by concentrating a heavy load in her center to bend her wy i ¥: Plan Intensive Tests “Then all control lines running to the rudders, the elevators, ballast bags, gas cells, etc., will be tested. H. Stone, Lander, Wyo., told memebrs of the Bismarck Kiwanis club in a luncheon address Tuesday. “No satisfied man ever accom- Plished anything more than nominal success, no great song was ever com- Posed, no great book was ever writ- ten except under mental stress and strain,” he stated. “It is the undaunted courage, the deathless nerve, the self-control, which refuses to accept or admit de- feat, which makes for the highest type of success,” he asserted. “If you abandon that doctrine of individualism as incorporated in our constitution by our pioneer fore- fathers, you kill all incentive to ex- cel, to use initiative, to develop am- bition and inventive genius. Instead you create an army of chair warmers, time-servers and clock-watchers. “Deeds for the betterment of man- kind have been accomplished by men ‘and women who counted their days not by the hour hand of the clock but by the results they obtain.
