Mekler of the Bismarck. Hebrew congregation has accepted a call to become rabbi of the Sons of Israel Congregation at Sioux Falls, 8. D. He plans to leave Bismarck with Mrs. Mekler and their two chil- Gren next week. : Rabbi Mekler came here more than, ‘two and a half years ago from Grand Forks, where he headed the Hebrew Institute and the Independent Chil- dren of Israel Congregation. His Bis- marck congregation embraces Jewry from the entire Missouri Slope coun- ary. When he came here services were conducted in downtown halls but through his efforts the Bismarck Synagogue, regarded as the finest in the state, was constructed. Construc- tion was started in 1929 and in 1930 it was dedicated with impressive ceremonies which brought men prominent in Jewry and the state's life to Bismarck. Rabbi Mekler is a graduate of the Vilna Rabbinical Seminary in south- eastern Lithuania, From that city has come some of the foremost Hebrew scholars of modern times. A. degree in 1929, Sunday night a surprise party was given in the rabbi’s honor by mem- bers of the congregation, and gifts’ were presented to him and Mrs, Mekler. The party was given under the auspices of the Ladies’ Aid So- ciety of the congregation, and was directed by Mrs. M. Zvorist, Mrs. Abe ‘Tolchinsky, and Mrs. C. B. Rosen. Regret was expressed at the rabbi's departure and well wishes extended to him in his new undertaking. Bridge was played at 10 tables dur- ing the evening and score prizes were awarded Miss Caroline Macovos, Ed! Tilson and G. Svaren. Those attending from out-of-town | were Mr. and Mrs. J.
