Extreme losses of 2 to 5 points in several prominent shares were in the main reduced to 1 to 3, and a few shares actually closed with gains. ‘With the international debt situation removed as a market factor, ard the mid-week business statistics revealing nothing but continued mid-summer quiet, the market was left largely to the devises of professional traders. ‘The turnover, however, exceeded 2,000,000 shares. The list opened with a heavy tone, rallied under leadership of rails in the morning, sold off rapidly for a time under bear pressure in the aft- ernoon, and recovered as bears took profits in the late trading. Rails held up well all day and New York Central Central, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific closed about a point higher. General Motors was firm, in response to its June sales report. U. S.
