He is Edward Asbury O'Neal, TI. who has been elected to succeed Sam H. Thompson as president of the American Farm Bureau federa- tion. Thompson resigned to be- come a member of the farm board. Under O'Neal's leadership the Ala- bama farm bureau has extended its activities to include the cooperative marketing of practically all farm products. Cooperative buying of sup- plies for planting, cultivating and harvesting of crops has iikewise savings to Alabama farmers. A tireless worker for improvement of farm conditions, O’Neal has been active in all farm organizations in his native state for years. He has served the American Farm Bureau. federation as vice president and as chairman of the legislative com- mittee. It was O'Neal who advanced the Proposal of a plan for the taking over of the great nitrate plants at Muscle Shoals by the American Farm Bureau federation under lease from the gov- ernment for the purpose of manufac- turing fertilizers. Born 55 years ago near the site of Muscle Shoals, O'Neal was reared on the farm and his interest in practical farming and the farmer's problems has grown with the years. Graduated from Washington and Lee’ university in Virginia in 1898. O'Neal began farming for himself near Florence in 1899. He was a member of the Washington end Lee football team in 1895-96. He was married November 23, 1904, to Julia Camper, of Florence. They have three children. School Notes | BALDWIN The following committee chairmen were appointed by Lavyr! Williams, newly elected president of the Bald- win Young Citizens’ League: Patriot- ism, Doris Poole; physical training, Delores Gehrke; courtesy committee, Mabel Anderson and Ruben Geigle. There was no school Thursday on account.of the bad storm and cold. Only two families came and it was not possible to heat the building com- fortably. We felt sorry that little Laurena Belle Lenihan, who has the farthest of anyone to come, should have tried to come as she suffered considerably from the cold when her father got stuck in the snow with his car. He was obliged to carry her to @ farmhouse and get her tw bed. Laurena Belle has not been absent or tardy all this school yea: Mrs. Haibeck has been enjoying a visit from her mother this week. Beginning with the closing of school Wednesday afternoon, April 1st, there will be an Easter vacation until Tuesday morning, April 7th. This will give a five-day vacation and include the usual Easter holidays, Mrs. Haibeck plans to spend her va- cation at the home of her parents at Pettibone, N. Success with plants started indoors and moved to the garden depends largely upon the way they are set out. The plants should be watered a few hours before they are moved to in- sure’ the soil sticking to their roots. Care Is Essential If the plants have been growing in pots or dirt bands there will be no trouble holding the soil on their roots, but if they are simply transplanted in a bed, a knife should be run be- tween them and soil should be taken up in-blocks around their roots. E. MCKENNEY Secretary American Bridge League The artificial one club bid is the oldest of all established artificial con- ventions. In auction bridge, we at one time saw an artificial minor suit bid—that is the bidding of one club or one diamond was arbitrary and meant nothing in regard to the hold- ing of the suit mentioned. It simply gave partner a conventional picture of the hand. This system, however, never proved popular in auction. The one club bid in contract be- came popular through the system known as the Vanderbilt club con- vention which required the holding of | three sure tricks. Ace and king of the same suit were counted as two tricks, ace and queen of the same suit as one and one-half tricks, ace as one trick, king queen of same suit as one trick, king as one-half trick. ‘When the Vanderbilt system is used, the bidding of one club means noth- ing in regard to the club holding, but indicates a three quick trick hand with sufficient strength for another bid even if partner's hand is worth- less, therefore it is a forcing bid and requires partner to respond. The Partner of the one club bidder is re- quired to bid unless released from this Obligation by an intervening bid from opponent. The arbitrary response of partner to the one club bid is one diamond. The one diamond response is made unless the hand contains two quick tricks valued according to the above table. This response of one diamond is arbitrary and means nothing in re- gard to the diamond holding. Ifthe hand held by the partner of the one club bidder does contain two sure tricks, he must respond with a suit or no trump bid. A bid of one in any suit but diamonds would indicate a four-card suit headed by queen, 10 or better. When the hand does not contain such a suit but still has the) two high card tricks, the proper re sponse is one no trump. If the partner of the one club bid- der has more than enough strength| Contract Bridge System— to put in a positive response, he should show the full size of his hand at once unless it is a two suitor, in which event he may name one suit and then on his next round may show the other suit. Strictly speaking, the Vanderbilt club system is not used to show two suit hands. There are, however, club conventional systems which do show r put in 000,000 and 300,000,000 bushels. are from the| thumb and finger and thrust, eye “Wheat farmers of the Northwest undoubtedly plan to lower as agriculture, but favorable weather for seeding might change their actual Plantings considerably,” the Review said. “Several groups of the Farm- ers Union organization, from Devils Lake in eastern North Dakota, to Garrison in the western part of the state,.in the last week have sent, in copies of signed agreements to lower their acreage to be seeded to wheat by 20 to 40 per cent each. “Actual figures on acreage of spring wheat are not officially made Public until the July 10 crop re- two suit hands:and they will be de-| Port. scribed in later articles. Generally the Vanderbilt club convention is used to show partner a strong no trump hand with three suits stopped, therefore users of this system only bid one no trump when all four suits are stopped, considering a suit stopped with queen and small if the other three suits are stopped. , Under this system, it is impossible #or'the original bidder to make a nat- ural one club bid. If he has a hand which is normally a one club bid, he is required to bid two clubs. This is not a forcing bid, but is made simply to show partner a minimum one club bid. Likewise, if the partner of the conventional one club bidder has @ hand containing two quick tricks with a real diamond bid, he cannot respond with one diamond, but must overcall with two diamonds. With the exception of the conven- tions outlined above, the Vanderbilt system is purely a natural one, using all other two bids as a forcing two bid. There are a great many variations to the club convention.. Some require a minimum of three or four high card. tricks to put in the arbitrary one club bid. Others’ show only top honor tricks suph as aces and kings. Gen- erally they require three or four of these top honor tricks. The advocates of this variation believe it helpful in arriving at a slam contract. The most popular variation of the club convention is & system which has been worked out by two’ prominent Cleveland players who employ the club convention to show the interme- | diate hands, ‘This system will be fully described in the following’ articles, (Copyright, 1931, NEA Service, Inc.)
