She married Dr. Arch- ibald Wintck, Brooklyn dentist, and tried to keep it a secret. Her old city eidtor broke the story. Thomas Mrs. H. J. Duemeland was elected president of the Bismarck Garden club at the annual business meeting of the organization following a ban- He quet Thursday evening at.the Hotel Prince. She succeeds Mrs, 8. D. Cook. Mrs. F. C. Stucke was named vice president and Mrs. H. J. Taylor cor- responding secretary. E. G. Wanner and F. J. Bavehdick were reelected as recording secretary and treasurer, re- spectively. Serving on the nominat- ing committe were H. P. Goddard, Mrs. Taylor and J. L. Barth and fol- lowing their report the slate of offi- cers was elected unanimously. Prizes aggregating $50 were award- ed by Mrs. F. C. Stucke, a former president of the group, in the Yard and Garden contest which is one of the major activities of the club. The. contest was divided into two classifi- cations, fo. old and new gardens, with first prize of $15, second of $10 and third, honorable mention in each class, Awards were made to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Fleck, 712 Mandan 8t., first. place; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dohn, 832 Mandan St., second; and Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Lawyer, 810 Man- dan St., honorable mention, in the new garden competition, Prizes for older gardens went to Mr, and Mrs. J. L, Barth, 827 Sixth St, first; Mr. and Mrs, F. A. Copelin, 515 Washing- ton St., second and Mr. and Mrs. H. 8. Lobach, 519 Ninth St., honorable mention. In presenting the awards Mrs. Stucke remarked on the improvement of lawns and yards throughout the clty since th: movement was inaug- urated. ‘the pointed ta the enjoy- ment the entire family receives from the out-door living rooms which have been created in many yards. Mrs. Cook, retiring president, ex- pressed the hope that Bismarck cit- izens will continue the excellent work done toward beautifying the city and that a larger number of families will eter the contest this year. J. L. Bell, who possesses one of the handsomest gardens of the city, spoke on “Tree Gardens,” selecting three of these which he has visited a: espe- cially worth of mention. They were the Arnold Arboretum, near Boston; the botanical gardens of Leyden uni- versity, Holland; and the terraced gardens built on one of the Borro- mean islands in Lake Maggiore, in northern Italy. Interest in tree collections and in landscape gardening on a large scale did not flourish in the United States until after the close of the Civil war; Bell pointed out. He told o: the his- tory and founding of the Arboretum, which nov: covers approximately 250 acres and has examples of every known kind of tree and shrub which can be grown. The influence of this “tree museum” on parks and public gardens, together with the assistance it has given nursery men ‘n testing | W out and adapting various types of trees to this climate has been far- reaching, Bell.said. To give an idea of the vastness of the collection, the ‘Asvoclatod Press Phote rtrand Russell became the third of Russell following the death is brother, Jolin Francis Russell, speaker listed many of the kinds found there. He also called attention to Chasle: 8. Sargent, who served as superintendent of the museum for 54 years, and whose work in perfecting trees and shrubs was second only to that of Li:ther Burbank. An unusual collection of plants brought from the Dutch East Indies characterizes the gardens at the university at bl Bell said, while the gardens on the Borromean island are distinguished by their formality and terraced arrangement. A de- scription of the latter, and their his- tory, were given by the 5 Musical numbers were presented during the evening by Mrs. F: J. Bavendick, who sang, “Thank God for & Garden” and “Morning Wind,” ac- companied by Mrs. R. B. Morris. Miss Marie Lemohn played a concert ar- rangement of “Turkey in the Straw.” Sioux City Man Ma: Face Murder Huron, 8.
