A) t { } . » SLEUTH'S STORY OF MURDER IS TERMED MAINLY IMAGINATION Local Police Chief Generally Credited for Solving Crime at Turtle Lake in 1920 \ pene If George W. King of Minneapolis ts not an author as well as a de- tective it isn't because he lacks imag- \nation, according to Chris J. Martine- son, Bismarck chief of police. King got into the news columns by filing a $10,000 suit against the Faw- cett Publications of Robbinsdale, * Minn., charging a recent issue of one of the firm’s magazines carried a story written by “Detective George W. « King.” In the story published, concerning the murder of the Jacob Wolf family of seven and a hired man at Turtle + Lake, N. D., 10 years ago, King is given credit for solving the mystery which surrounded the case from April 24, 1920, two days after the murder, when the bodies were found, until May 13, 1930, when Henry Layer, a neighboring farmer, confessed. The “true facts” of the story were pub- ifshed, King said in his complaint, but it was printed without his knowl- edge or consent. In_ this territory, however, King stands discredited as a “writer of true detective stories.” Martineson, who received the $1,000 reward for solving the crime, said he was dumfounded when he learned of «» the story carried in the magazine. Martineson produced numerous news- paper clippings and letters which credited him with the “master-mind- ing.” Files of the local newspaper show that it carried at that time stories of praise for Martineson’s detective abil- ity. In one instance John Williams, then McLean county state's attorney, is quoted as saying: “Chief Martine- son deserves all of the credit possible in. the solution of this terrible mys- tery. Without his keen judgment and marvelous intuition neither Sheriff tefferud nor myself would have been ble to bring Layer to justice so quickly.” William Langer, Bismarck attorney, then North Dakota attorney general and who, the story said, hired King, said today that Martineson solved the mystery and that King’s only part in the case was to operate a dictaphone machine which recorded Layer’s con- fession. But for King’s presence in operating the dictaphone he would have had no part in the case, Langer said. Aiding Martineson, Langer said, were George-McDowell, special agent for the Northern Pacific railroad; State's Attorney Williams, Sheriff Ole Stefferud, and E. F, Heaner, a St. Paul detective.
