The mud slingers, sarcasm manu- facturers and editorial croakers have had an inning. But the president has not permitted himself to be deflected from either the methods which are peculiarly his own or the aims he believes to be right.” Mr. Hoover, she added, avoids a fight as long as possible, “but when it becomes the only alternative he ‘gives ‘em hell.’” As for prohibition, Mrs. Willebrandt said her faith had been “stretched thin on some occasions when I have observed the amazing lack of sports- manship of some citizens on this sub- ject.” She added, however, that she was confident success would attend the efforts of Amos Woodstock, new director of prohibition enforcement. WESTERN BLAZES THREATEN TOWNS Some Fires Under Control and Weary Fighters Deploy to Combat New Ones Hollywood, July 15—No matter where you were born there is @ pos- sibility that you may some day be- come a screen celebrity. Proof may be found in a recent survey of the film colony which showed that 44 states and 30 foreign countries have given the American screen its popular players. Of course, if this survey is to be taken as a criterion, the natives of some states are afforded better op- portunities than those of others. If you were born in New York, for ex- ample, you have just about 100 times as much chance of crashing the sa- SE OR cred portals of moviedom as if you first saw the light of day in Florida— New York being the birthplace of 104 celebrities while Florida claims only one, Evelyn Brent. Other leading claimants for film notables are California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Ohio, be: ing named in the order of their rank- ing. And England leads by @ con- siderable margin every other foreign country. Coming to the cities we find that. New York City and Chicago rank first and second. New York, with its 104 players, has nearly twice as many cinema folk to its credit as California, which ranks second with 59.
