Doheny be freed: on a charge of bribery, Frank Hogan. chief of defense counsel, began his argu- ments today with an explanation of the Pearl Harbor Hawaii naval oil storage contract. The Pearl Harbor contract gave a Doheny company preference to. the Elk Hills, Calif., naval oil lease sub- ject to certain conditions and this ) preference was regarded as manda- tory. The- government charges that Do- heny gave Albert B. Fall, former sec- i * retary of the interior a bribe of $100,- 6 000 to influence his award of the Elk Hills oil lands to Doheny interests and that the Pearl Harbor contract ‘was arranged so that the man on trial would get the valuable properties in California. Naval Airplanes Will Chase Eclipse of Sun| San Diego, Calif., Mar. 21.—(®)— ‘Use of a navy airplane to “chase an eclipse” has been requested by naval observatory officials in Washington, D. C. and the request will be granted, it has been announced at headquar- ters of the cleventh naval district. The eclipse, a total eclipse of the nd sun, will be an exceedingly brief af- oH fair, according to word received here. } . Occurring on April 28, it will have a ; € period of totality of only one and one-half seconds, and its path of totality, in eastern California, will be enly half @ mile wide. While the navy is not sending a * formal eclipse expedition, Mrs. Isabel M. Lewis, an astronomer in the Ephemeris department of the naval observatory, is taking leave and going to the scene at her own expense “to cover” the eclipse for the navy. Two photographic planes from North Island will be sent to Honey Lake, California in the eclipse area, to operate in connection with her work. Northern Pacific to Run ‘Alaskan’ Train The “Alaskan” will be the name of @ trancontinental train operating be- tween Chicago and the Pacific north- west. E. E. Nelson, passenger traffic man- ager of the Northern Pacific, an- nounced t that the name the “Alaskan” sbe given tranisconti- nental trains Nos. 3 and 4 which run between Seattle and Chicago. Here- tofore these trains have been called the “Comet,” which name will here- after be used exclusively for the Yel- lowstone Nations] Park train, which is operated by the Northern. Pacific between Chicago and Yellowstone Park during the park season. » With the increase of nation-wide ‘“tnterest in Alaska, its recreational and industrial possibilities, the “Alaskan” has been chosen as an’ appropriate name for a train operating between ‘ the middlewest and the Pacific, \ where steamers are boarded for the Alaskan cruise, according to Mr. Nel- son. Travel by vacationists to the scenic areas of Alaska each year has shown increases, and, with the en- largement of the steamship eccom- modations this year, the Northern Pa- cific, by naming one of its transcon- tinental passenger trains the “Alas- kan,” gives recognition to this current travel trend, Mr. Nelson said.
