‘SPIRIT OF ONE-TIME Heinie Wagner W THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1930 Se TENN SN _ CHAMPIONS CARRIES — ONANOTHER SEASON President Bob Quinn and Man- ager Refuse Big Offers for Ed Morris ROTHROCK, SCARRITT SWAT Todt, Regan, Rhyne and Reeves Are Probable Starters in Regular Infield By ALAN GOULD Pensacola, Fla., Mar. 19.—(#}—The glories of the old Red Sox have de- parted but the spirit carries gallant- | dy_on. ‘When Connie Mack, in 1922, gave up his long-term occupancy of the American League cellar for better things, the Red Sox took over the lease. Bill Carrigan, a great catcher and manager of two world’s cham- pionship teams, failed in a three-year come-back attempt to lift the Red Sox from their lowly estate. This year, Charles (Heinie) Wagner, Car- | rigan’s leutenant and himself a vet- eran of the famous 1912 champions, has taken over the somewhat thank- less job of trying to go somewhere biichiooniiianneeontta Here are some of the veterans rounding into shape at the Athletics’ training camp at Fort Myers, Fla. with a team that lacks the punch to be considered a serious factor in the race. ‘Won't Sell Morris President Bob Quinn and Manager ‘Wagner have stoutly refused to listen to flattering offers of players and much needed cash from the Yankees for the services of the No. 1 right hander of the pitching staff, Big Ed Morris, Mobile, Ala. With a last place club in 1929, Mor- ris won 14 and lost 14. He should do ‘as well or better this year. In ad- dition, Wagner counts on some capa- ble right-handed flinging from Char- Jey Ruffing, Danny MacFayden, the former Somerville schoolboy star, Jack Russell and Milt Gaston. ‘This group lacks something in left- handed support, with only the veteran Billy Bayne, Edgar Carroll and Ed Durham, as portside entries, unless Ben shields, formerly with the ‘Yankees, stages a come-back. Ray Dobens, ex-college star, and Horace Lisenbee, once a sensation with ‘Washington, have chances to stick, Rothrock, Scarritt Hitters ‘The principal punch in the lineup is packed by two useful outfielders, Jack Rothrock and Russ Scarritt, who made good last year in his first major league season. Both are .300 hitters. Tom Oliver, an Alabama product, may get the other outfield post although John Winsett, a .346 hitter with Mobile last year, 19-year- old Joe Cicero from the Eastern icague, and Bill Barrett, formerly of White Sox, are battling for jobs. The regular infield shapes up as fast and snappy with Phil Todt at first, Bill Regan at second, Hal Rhyne, the former Pittsburgher, at short and Bob Reeves, the former Georgia Tech star obtained from ‘Washington, at third.
