WOUNDED INREVOLT { OF CHINESE SOLDIERS} Lieut. C. M. Winslow Struck in Leg by Machine Gun Fusillade Shanghai, Mar. 15.—(#)—Lieutenant C.M. Winslow;commanding the United States naval armed guard aboard the American Yangtse Rapids Steamship company’s steamer, was wounded in the leg by ‘a machine gun bullet dur- ing a clash. between his guards and lawless Chinese soldiers roaming the north bank of the Yangtse river 50 miles above Ichang yesterday. The wounding of Lieutenant Wins- low was the result of a particularly vicious attack by lawless soldiers in which the latter used field pieces and machine guns, heavily bombarding several steamers, both and American, and paralyzing river traf- fic for several hours. None of the other Americans aboard the Chiping participating in the skirmish wes injured, although three Chinese members of the crew were seriously wounded. “The attack, the most severe staged by: disorganized soldiery in many ‘months, occurred at the dangerous Hsintang Rapids, one of the most dif- ficult for navigation on the entire Yangtze. At this location the river is narrow, forcingsteamers close to the banks and thus subjecting them to shore attacks at close range. In all, five American Sangtze Rap- ids company steamers were involved in yesterday's attack. Two Chinese vessels also figured. ‘TheChinese vessels were first to en- counter the attacking group. The Chinese nationalist soldier guard aboard the two ships answered the attack with machine gun fire, slaying numerous bandits. As a result of the bandit fire, however, the steamers were forced to retreat down-river, abandoning their voyage toward Chungking. Two of the American vessels, the Wing and Iping, also en route to Chunking, next encountered the lawless soldiers. Without returning the fire of the attackers they retreat- ed, proceeding to Ichang. ————— | AT THE MOVIES | UP THE LADDER OF FAME WITH FRANCES UNDERWOOD Cast in one of the leading feminine roles of the all-talking- version of “HER UNBORN CHILD,” described as a tremendous human document, and which is being presented - with marked attention at the Paramount ‘Theatre Monday and Tuesday, is no less 2 stage luminary than Miss Frances Underwood, who has won a niche all for herself in Broadway's hall of fame.
