Nearness toSt..Paul One Rea- son, Type of Timber Not Mountainous Is Other nee ree St. Paul, Feb. 6.—(#)—Announce- ment that North and South Dakota, exclusive of. the Black Hills, has been transferred to the territory of the Lake States forest experiment station 4t University Farm here, was made today by Dr. Rapheal Zon, director of the station. With this transfer, St. Paul be- comes the headquarters for the a ministration of the federal forestry in five states, including », Michigan and Wisconsin in addition to the Dakotes. North Dakota was transferred from the territory of the Northern Rocky Mountain forest experiment station at: Missoula, Mont., while South Da- kota is taken away from the station at Denver. The Black Hill forest re- gion, however, was left in charge of the Denver station, since the Black Hills forests are similar to those in the mountain territory. ‘The fact that North Dakota is much nearer to St. Paul than to is one of the reasons pointed out by the forest service for the geen , sucl ticularly as regards agriculture. It also was felt that the lake states station at present is better equipped to undertake research into plams planting since the type of forests in- volved more nearly resemble that with which the St. Paul station has been working.
