- EPISCOPAL RECTOR TALKS ON EDITORIAL Rev. Bennett-Haines Favors Legislation Sparing Babies | From Prison Life i i} | | A note of practical humanitarian- ism was injected into the Sunday | morning sermon of Rev. A. T. Ben- nett-Haines, in the services at St. George's Episcopal church, when he took note of an editorial in The Trib- une of January 7, and devoted a por- tion of his remarks to the rearing of babies in prisons where the mothers happen to be convicts. He agreed with the editorial that this was something shocking to the Chris- | tian sense and to be deplored as starting a child off in life with the worst handicap that could befall, short of a serious physical misfortune. It emphasized the fact that not everything is best in the best of all} possible worlds. Children should have { anything but prison contact at the outset of the lives. Rector Bennett-Haines thought here was*a field for reformative legis- lation, that at the next session of the legislature something should be done in the form of enactment by which such a condition could be avoided in this state—headed off if it exists here as in Auburn, New York, on which place the editorial comment was based. COOK MAY BE FREED FROMLEAVENWORTH { Leavenworth, Kas., Jan. 13.—(?}—A| parole hearing beginning in the fed- eral penitentiary here today may spell | freedom for Dr. Frederick A. Cook, internationally known explorer who; is serving a sentence of 14 years, nine | months for using the mails to de- fraud. Dr, Cook's parole application will be herd with 1.200 others. There is a general feeling here that the explorer’s application will be approved, as there is no known opposition and officials who heard his trial and who prose- cuted him are reported to favor his release. The man who was honored as a hero when he announced in 1908 that | he had reached the north pole, only to be branded a faker by subsequent investigation, has been broken in body by his disgrace and penal confint ment. It is on a plea of ill health | that his parole application Is based. y Mobridge R. N. Lodge | 4 Officers Installed Mobridge, S.
