While hesitating to make definite predictions on account of the vat- garies of the sun’s activities, inves- tigation leads him to believe 1930 will see a reduction in rainfall with the many results which that entails. All forms of electrical transmis- sion improve when ultra-violet raye are weak. Static is lessened and ra- dio reception is favorably affected. The Aurora Borealis, which obstructs long distance telegraphic communication, becomes infrequent. Dr. Delury’s expectation of a bum- per wheat crop in 1928 at the sun spot peak was followed by the great- est production of any year in Cana- dian history. Michigan Professor Wins Chemistry Prize New York, Jan. 3.—(AP)—Dr. Herbert i1. Dow, of Midland, Mich.,| today was announced as the winner for 1929 of the Perkins Medal, one of the highest awards in chemistry. The award was made to Dr. Dow be- cause of “his development of im- provements in the production of chlorine, magnesium, and numerous other chemical materials.” Presenta- tion of the medal will be made Jan. 10 at the Chemists Club here. Without Clues To Identity of Gunmen Who Seriously Wounded Man and Girl Detroit, Jan. 3.—(@™—After more than 24 hours investigation police to- day were without definite informa- tion that might lead to the capture of the gang which yesterday serious- ly wounded Inspector Henry J. Gar- vin, head of the crime and bomb squad and an 11-year old school girl in an attempt to put the police offi- cial “on the spot.” But none provid- ed the investigators with substantial clues. | Garvin, although seriously wound- | ed will recover. It was reported that | the girl, Lois Bartlett, has a chance for recovery. She was shot five cops The shooting on | avenue between Jefferson and Essex avenues as Inspector Garvin was { driving to work.
