And for all but $2,000 of it, Boston said, the big boss of the gambling world in New York gave “I. O. U's.” There was a pile of cash on the table in front of Rothstein when I pulled out a couple of hours before the end,” said Boston. “And did he keep that?” asked Fer- dinand Pecora, assistant district at- torney. “Yes,” was Boston's reply. Boston said he won $8,000 in the stud poker game, a feature of which was side betting for large sums on the highest cards. Meyer said George McManus lost $51.000, of which he paid $20,000 in cash on the spot. The rest of his losses, Meyer testified, McManus paid up in the following two days. It is in the testimony of the partic- ipants in that poker game that the state hopes to find material that will convince the jury that McManus had @ motive for luring Rothstcin into a room of the Park Central hotel to his death the night of November 4, 1928. Boston said that Rothstein, Mc- Manus, “Nigger Nate” Raymond. who came out of the game a $200,000 win- ner, “Titanic” Thompson, Bowe, and himself participated in the side bet- ting, and that the stakes ran high.
