The Williams singers are somewhat of a novelty. Any negro aspiring to be an artist in the several lines of estheticism must seem more or less so, One asscciates colored singers with southern plantations, with the levee, the river, the cottonfields and the southern moonlight. When col- ored artists, especially singers, ap- pear in such a setting, a genuine en-| ° tertainment is assured. If, however. the colored artist essays the roles of Italian opera, there is an unreality about the performance, as in the singing of the sextet from Lucia, last evening, by the Williams singers. Now, the Williams singers appear- ed in a combination of musical roles. They sang negro spirituals, popular old southern melodies of the Stephen Foster type and operatic selections. As entertainers in the realm of the| negro they outshone their more sophisticated efforts as cultured ar- tists. They were out of their setting there. It was like stunt singing. But they were not only at their best in the spirituals and folk songs which they sang, they were in their world. That was artistry enough. It proved them one of the peerless Each shown Freak o'clock ing on struck. rescue stage.
