Boyd Free on Bonds After His Car Drives Through Strikers Elizabethton, Tenn., May 17.—) —Adjutant General W. C. Boyd, Tennessee, was arrested here today on a warrant charging “aiding and abetting an attempt to commit murder,” sworn out by Evelyn Heaton, a striking textile worker injured yesterday by an automobile that dashed through a group of picketers who blocked the road. He ‘was released on $1,000 bond. A warrant also was issued for Joe Calhoun, driver of the car that struck Miss Heaton, and a deputy left at once for Jonesboro where he was taken yesterday for safe keep- ing. Strikers charge the car rushed pickets in the road on the orders of Adjutant General Boyd. Miss Hea- ton was seriously hurt and three other workers were treated for in- juries. The adjutant general said he or- dered the way cleared so the car could proceed to the textile plants nounced that three additional com- panies of guardsmen, approximately 225 officers and men, would arrive during the day to aid in preserving order. A cordon of guardsmen surround- ed the court house where the trials of the strikers are being held. High School Teacher Til, Leave Is Granted Miss Pearl Bryant, teacher of Eng- lish and dramatics in the high school, is ill in a local hospital, and her place on the faculty is being filled by Mrs. John Page.
