Gorman, state leader of county agents, Fargo, also will attend. According to information presented to a conference at Minot, last week, grasshoppers have been increasing in this section of the state in the last three years. Outbreaks took place at @ number of points last year, and, as the fall was extremely favorable for the grasshoppers laying their eggs, it is expected that there will be a con- siderable increase this year over last. According to Mr. Shotwell, unless active control measures are taken, farmers of this territory are likely to be faced with as widespread and damaging an epidemic of hoppers as took place in 1920 in a few years, should weather conditions continue to be favorable. Farmers in territory where there ‘was grasshopper damage last fall are urged by J. A. Monte, state entomolo- gist of the N. D. A. C. who was also in attendance at the conference, to make a survey at once and learn the location and the extent of the grass- hopper egg areas. Where they are found, plans should be made immed- fately to destroy them by plowing the headlands of the fields and preparing to poison any that hatch. The destruction of the grasshoppers in the local areas where they were troublesome last year and are now on the increase will serve to prevent a general outbreak such as experienced some years ago. The eggs are ori- ginally laid at the edge of the field in the sod, and in a few cases in stubble fields where the land had laid over until it is packed fairly hard. In stubble fields the eggs can be found hanging in clusters to the roots. On the sod lands at the edge of the fields they will be found in clusters just beneath the surface of the ground. If eggs are found or grass- hoppers are seed hatching, it should be reported at once to the local coun- ty agent. School Fraternities Hit by Arkansas Law Little Rock, Ark—(?)—A law just signed by Governor Parnell, forbid- ding fraternities, sororities or other secret societies in high schools or schools of lower rank, has caused a stir throughout the state. The act provides for suspension or expulsion of any pupil in # school be- low the rank of. college who is, or is pledged ta become, a member of asecret society or fraternity. An exception was made for local chapters of national organizations. Some of the leaders of the societies say affiliation with a national organ- ization will make them legal. f Additional Markets ‘ LIBERTY BONDS CLOSE New York, April 25.— (4) —Liberty bonds close: Liberty 3%48—97. 28.
