Benator Nye One of Group Op- t posed to Hoover's Choice > for Secretary of Interior “Jen. 18.—(#)—The ~ Washington, Prospect. Senator Deneen, Republican, Illi- nois, a personal friend of Mr. West, was prepared to continue the fight he has made in his behalf and was confident that the votes were at hand to obtain confirmation. . Senator Norris, Republican, of i braska, supported by some members of the Republican independent bloc. and some Democrats, are opposed to ‘West principally because of his in- yestments in stocks of the Samuel Insull power utilities interests. At a hearing before the public lands committee, West testified that he had invested about $67,000 in Insull com- pany stock but had sold them when he was named secretary of ‘interior last August. He offered to withdraw from participation in any proceedings before his department involving the Insull interests. As ssoretacy of interior, Mr. West also is a member of the federal power commission which passes on appli- cations for power permits. He re- cently sat as a member of the com- Pany for a power permit at Cumber- land Falls, Kentucky. Chairman Nye of the lands commit- tee who is opposing Mr. Wes: spon- Sored a resolution adopted this week by the senate calling upon the power nm to report what protests ad been made against West's par- ‘dcipation in this case. The lands committee by a vote of 8 to 4 favorably reported the nomi- nation of West to the senate before the Christmas recess. Informal announcement has been t™made by members of the senate In- dian affairs committee that they will Voice no protest against the secretary ‘because of his administration of the middle Rio Grande conservancy proj- ect in New Mexico which is under jurisdiction of the interior depert- ment. Affairs of this project have been under inquiry recently by the committee.
