INSULATION ADDS WARMTH TO BUILDING <oi4 Winters and Hot Summer} Sun Make It Both Comfort- able and Economical (By The Building Editor) When the mercury drops to zero and below and the householder spends a lot of time stoking his fur- |. nace to keep the house warm -he wishes he had insulation in his home. His wishes are fervently renewed Mee it comes time to pay the coal | ud. Insulation is to a house what blankets and comforters are to a bed. They aren’t warm in them- selves but they make easier the bus- iness of keeping. warm. Because of the rigors of winter in this climate and the fact that the sun shines for long hours in sui- mer, insulation is imperative to com- fort. No conscientious builder would recommend leaving it out of a home and yet there are houses in Bismarck without it. Briefly stated the argument for insulation is that it makes the house warmer in winter and cooler in sum- mer; that it saves shoveling coal and cuts the coal bill. The makers of balsam wool and thermofill, the insulation used in the Demonstration home, claim that it cuts the cost of coal enough in two winters to pay for itself and after that the owner uses it free. Warm As Wool Balsam wool is a wood fibre prod- uct, treated to make it fire resist- ant and arranged in sheets so that it can be nailed to the walls of the house. Tests by the goveynment show that it is practically as warm as a wool blanket of the same thick- ness, and it is an inch thick. It skeeps the cold from penetrating the walls in winter and keeps out the heat in summer. It obtains its effec- tiveness by millions of dead air cells which make it a non-conductor : of heat or cold. __Insulation for the ceiling is gypso- fill, a patented mixture of gypsum and fiber. It is a permanent mater- ial and fireproof. It is commonly used in ceilings because it is placed between the joists or rafters and is easier to apply than most other ma- terials. Since a great deal of the heat generated in a home goes out through the ceiling in winter, and the roof gets hot in summer, ceiling insulation is even more important than wall insulation, according to many builders. Both are worth their cost and more. In addition to the patented insul- ations the Demonstration home has three coats of building paper, which also serve as insulation. Two of these are asphalted bi building paper. The third is Rhinorop, a pat- ented building paper built up of sey- eral thicknesses with a tar prep; ation in the center and cords placed through it to make jt tough. Wood Permits Cold The job builder to this material is to assist the insulation in making the house impervious to heat or cold and to keep out the wind. Tests show that wind pressure has ‘some effect inside a water tight wooden box, due to the fact that wood is porous and lets small quantities of air pass through it. Paper is less porous and the tar preparations make it practically wind-tight. The shingles on the house are of asphalt composition with granite face and varicolored, lending a pleas- ing effect to the roof. Wood shingles may be used and from some standpoints are desirable but the permanence of asphaltic shingles, their attractiveness and the ease of laying them properly causes them to be widely used. The shingles were supplied for the Demonstration Home by the Bis- marck int and Glass company. The insulation was sold by the Cen- tral Lumber company.
