That the administration has made good its promises is best at- tested, Mr. Mellon said, “by the fact that today the finances both of the government and of the country are in a sound condition.” Governor Smith and other Demo: | cratic speakers, he said, “not only seek to withhold credit from the Coolidge administration for its un- disputed achievements * * * but apparently do not approve that rec- | ord.” He added that “they are care- ful not to specify in what respect they would change it but content| themselves with the charge that nearly eight years of good govern- 4went and mounting prosperity do not in their opinion constitute a rec- ord of ‘constructive’ achievement.” a” | Melech Recovering at Local Hospital William Melech, mechanic at the Corwin - Churchill garage who was injured in a “freak” accident Tues- day, was “coming along fine” today, according to physicians at a local hospital. Physicians said that his condition was not as serious as it was thought at first, and that Melech may be re- leased from the hospital in a few days. ‘When Melech, who is 24 years old, was taken to the hospital yesterday, it was thought that his condition was serious, with possible broken ribs and . internal injuries. A thorough examination revealed, however, that the only injuries were bad body bruises. Melech was injured when crushed between two automobiles at the ga- rage yesterday. After working be- neath one car, he stepped up along side the machine and was caught when a second machine backed against him, The driver of the sec- ond automobile was under the im- pression that his car was in low gear when he stopped instead of in re- verse. Eat Two Apples to Keep Doctor Away Chicago, Oct. 12.—(P) — With 100,000,000 bushels of apples about to be marketed for use as fresh fruit, enthusiasts are urging everybody to use two apples a day. Keeping the doctor away by eating only one apple per 24 hours is proving inadequate to sustain the farm price of apples. Reports today from the govern- ment bureau of agricultural eco- nomics say that in West Virginia, : example, the average price to is 80 cents a bushel, com- pared with $1.60 last year. Record- breaking crops of peaches, pears and grapes is the chief reason given why apples are now such a bargain. D., Oct. 12.—(AP)— The function, of the public schoo! is to teach the fundamentals and also to secure an all-sided growth of the student’s mentality, Charles E. Scott, director of training at the Minot re Teachers College, said here to- jay. Professor Scott was a speaker this morning before a delegation of state educators to the convention of the southwest division of the North Da- kota Education association, in ses- sion here. Scott said that in spite of the dis- cussion of the subject, there still 1s considerable lack of agreement as to just what, the functions of the public education are.
