The colony had its beginning back in 1905, when a small group of divers, whose ancestors for centuries had plucked sponges from the bed f the Aegean sea, came here. Lives of the divers are shortened if they fol- low the trade more than ten years and nfany become partially para- lyzed because of the high air pres- sure in the diving suits in which they work.
