TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1927 U.S. COMMERCE CHAMBER ASKS BiG TAX SLASH luggests Minimum of $400,- 000,000 Instead of That Pro- posed by Mellon Washington, Nov. 1—()—With che recommendation of the treasury that tax reduction he held to a $225,000,000 maximum before them, members of the house ways and means committee were urged today by the United States chamber of commerce to make a tax slash of about $400,000,000.. James R. Maccoll, speaking for the chamber, said that “it is common knowledge that in recent years the actual surplus has greatly exceeded the estimates.” : Almost simultaneously with his appearance on the witness stand Representative Garner of ‘Texas, ranking Democrat on the committee, issued a statement assailing the treasury for inaccuracy in its fore- casts of surpluses and advocating a reduction of the corporation tax from 13 1-2 per cent to 11 or vossi- bly 10 per cent, instead of be 12 per cent proposed by Secretary Mel- ion. The Texan sajd he believed mater- ial reduction of this tax rather than a revision of surtax rates on incomes of from $16,000 to $90,000 was re- quired. fs Maccoll agreed with James A. Emery, repfesenting the National Association of Manufacturers, that the corporation tax should be re- duced. Emery advocated alloting a major part of the prospective reduc- tion of corporations while Maccoll insisted t..at the inheritance and re- maining excise taxes should be re- pealed. The treasury yesterday also urged repeal of the estate tax but opposed elimination of the so-called nuisance levies. McDonald Named to Succeed Rohrer as Street Commissioner Resignation of W. S. Rohrer as street comm iatanioner; deputy building inspector and deputy health officer, was accepted by the city commission Monday night and, upon recommen- dation of Chas. Wachter, commis- sioner of streets, Dave R. McDonald, Jr., was named to succeed Rohrer. It is understood that Mr. Rohrer has accepted a position with the Wachter Transfer company, and his resignation is effective immediately. McDonald has for several years past been an assistant in the office of the city engineer. An ordinance was introduced Mon- day night creating watermain and waterworks district No. 3, and the city engineer presented plans and| | specifications showing the cost of installing a new hydrant on Main avenue east to be $658, : City Attorney C. L. Young was in- structed to release the $57 judgment against Laura W. Hughes upon pay- ment of the city’s actual costs of $15. The commission agreed to accept * $1,000 from George M. Register in settlement of delinquent taxes and penalties for 1926 and prior years on lots 1 and 2, block original plat. Some time ago Mr. Register made an offer of $900, but the com- mission refused to consider any of- fer less than $1,000 on this property.
