Second MARKETS _ By Anceclated Prose Leased Wire PROFIT TAKING LOWER PRICES)": Wheat, Corn, Oats All Touch New Highs But Advances » Fail to Hold Chicago, Aug. 11.(®)-Wheat, corn and oats all touched new high price records for the season today, but the advances failed to hold in the faco of heavy profit taking. Reactions were also given some momentum at times owing to ‘stoek market weak- ness. Increasing black rust damage to domestic spring wheat, together with talk of future heavy abandon- ment of corn acreage, had much to do with bringing about the price ag jae heat closed unsettled 1 to 1% net renee corn 21% to 2% off; oats % to 1@1% down, and provisions showing 2 to 15 cents decline. Black rust crop damage advices from North Dakota today were given special attention and in_ particular word that south from Minot early wheat is' damaged 50 per cent to al- most total. Some fields were reported as being in such bad condition from yust that they will not nay to cut. these re- ports, together with samples shown here today, from Rurleigh county, North Dakota,-upset belief that rust damage in North Dakota is confined to the Red River Valley and terri- tory adjoining. In connection with official com- ment that there is much corn acre- age which is so late that only an unusually late fall will prévent con- siderable more than usual abandon- ment of corn acreage, leading unof- ficial authorities here asserted that. frost must hold off until November 1, if the whole acreage included in the government estimgte is to ma- ture. It was also cffttended that there are several million acres of. corn now so smal! and late that frost before the middle of October would be: destructi ;| MINNEAPOLIS MARKET GETS SHARP SETBACK Minneapolis, Aug. 11.—()—Profit taking in a lull in buying on a fast early advance resulted in a sharp setback in wheat here Inte in the session today. Close was % to one cent lower here, ii to 14% at Chicago and 1% to % lower at Winnipeg. Prices shot up rapidly early in the session, but buying power let down after to 2% advance. By the start of the last hour prices he fall- en back, near yesterday's f: its made new high early He fell back % cent under yesterday’s close, Rye turned lower with wheat after a small early rise. Barley and flax- seed showed resistagce on the s back in sympathy with other mar- kets. Buenos Aires flax futures were % cent lower at midday and close was 1 to,1'% cents lower. Cash wheat ‘held firm but there was less competition in spots. Win- ter wheat was firm with low protein quiet and high protein in good de- mand, Durum was scarce and firm, the market largely nominal. Corn was in light supply and de- mand was fair to good. Trading basis was firm and unchanged. Oats were firm. Rye was in good demand and firm.| Barley was sip to one cent high- er. Price range was 65 to 81. cents. Flaxseed was The market was nominal, being no ar- rivals, easy. there FARGO LIVESTOCK Fargo, N. The break in Manhattan Electrics Supply came while the stock e change was investigating reports of a “technical corner’ in that following its ational from a low of high of 132 a few weeks ago. The stock closed last night at 120-2, tiuctuated erratically within a fiv then broke preceptitiously to 1%, rallied above 80, and then collapsed again to 64% early in the after- noon, Houston Oil dropped 15% points to 128 and rallied to 135. Timken Rol- ler Bearing dropped 10 to 123% and snapped back to 130 and Du Pont, Commercial Solvents “B,” and Dela place throughout the ee advance ware & Hudson sold down 5 pa or more. Violent fluctuations of this nature jnvariably scared many traders and investors away from the market, and resulted in heavy _ liquidation throughout the list. Little attention was paid for the time being to out- side news developments. A further shading in time money rates, bring- ‘ing the shorter maturities below 4 per cent for the first time this year, indicated that there was no strain on the credit siuation. Call money was in plentiful supply at 3% per cent. Failure of the directors of the Southern Pacific to increase the d |idend caused speculative disappoint- ment in some quarters, although the regular payment was all that was ex- pected in banking quarters. In the first wave of buying, new peak prices were established by American Express, Consolidated Gas. General Railway Signal and several other issues. The cloging was weak. The lo: est prices of the session were regis- tered by many stocks in the final hour, following another dive in Man- hattan Electrical Supply to \s2, after it had recovered to around 70. Unit- ed States Cast Iron Pipe crashed nine poitns, sterling products cight and General Motors and White Sewing Machine around five.
