The advance reached violent proportions in a few issues which are believed to harbor a large short interest, Tim- ken Roller Bearing soaring nearly 17 points to 141 and Manhattan Elec- trical Supply nearly 10 points to 131. Banks called about $10,000,000 in loans during the day but’ there ap- peared to be plenty of funds ayail- able at the renewal rate of 4 per cent. The recent reduction in bank- ers’ acceptances, following soon after thesdecrease in Kansas City federal reserve rediscount rate, has aroused hopes in speculative quarters of euts in other reserve centers, particular- ly those serving the agricultural regions. Practically all of the high grade railroad and industrial stocks reached new high ground, the list including S. Steel common, General Motors, |General Electric, American Tobacco, American Smelting, Baldwin Locomo- tive, Consolidated Gas, Chrysler Moz |tors, Hudson Motors, Woolworth, At- j¢chison, New York Central, Union Pa- cific, Southern Pacific, Southern Railway,-Canadian Pacific and Chesa- ‘peake & Ohio. 5 Chicago grain operators were’ re- ported to be heavy buyers of Tim- ken, which sold as low as 78 earlier in the year. Both Timken and Man- hattan Electrical Supply, which has more than doubled in price this year, fell back sharply on profit taking. The rapidity of the advance in these and other issues led to cautionary advices -by some of the larger com: mission houses, who urged prot taking on the theory that the techni- position of the market had been weakened. The closing was strong. General Railway Signal, Union Carbide, U. 8. Cast Iron Pipe, Goodrich, American Smelting, Crucible Steel and Postum Cereal were foremost in the late up- ward surge, which also carried Gen- eral ‘Motors and U.S. Steel to higher levels, Total sales approximated 2,200,000 shares. 5 ’ BISMARCK GRAIN (Furnished by Russe!
