Unexpected strength of wheat quotations at Liverpool due to improved demand*was a buélish fs tor. Congestion in th May delivery here resulted in the May price going up to around 27 cents over July withstanding a good deal of sithultan- cous selling of May and buying of July. * _ Foreigners were credited with tak- ing an active hand in the buying of future deliveries of wheat today here, but cool weather in the northwest tended to exercise somewhat of a moderate influence on general spec- ulative buyers, In connection with the foreign buying it was reported that English flour mills have resumed grinding, and that British stocks of wheat are being depleted, owing to small receipts. On the other hand, reports from crop observers regard- ing spritg wheat conditions were pessimistic, especially as to South Dakota, One expert wired that the South Dakota crop prospects was get- ing poorer each day, part would not average half a stand, and that late germinated Wheat, is dying for lack of moisture. Corn and oats were higher sympa- thizing with wheat. Liquidation ap- peared in oats on the rally and ‘the early advance was Jost later, but there was no material pressure on corn. Provisions firmer in line with -hogs and grain. Wheat closed strong, % to 4 cents net higher, corn % to % up, oats at % decline to ' advance, and provis- ions unchanged to 7 cents down. WHEAT CLOSES HIGHER ON MINNEAPOLIS MARKET Minneapolis, Minn., May 20—(AP)— Wheat developed marked strength to- day, cables coming unexpectedly strong. Opening was higher later moving up with minor reaction until to 3% cents, The finish was % to 2% cents high- r. i Oats were up % to % cent at one time but dragged back part way. July rye bulged 2% cents on export news, July barley finished mildly firm. July flaxseed was up 1% cents Cash wheat generally was relativ ly 1 to-2 cents higher compared with early yesterday. The demand for average quality and woight was bet- ter. Durum was steady. Corn offerings were scanty. “Kiln dried was in moderate supply and steady. Oats were % cent better. Rye was steady Barley was firm, Flax- seed was quiet und steady. Trading in this issue comprised about one-fourth of the entire volume of business in the first three hours, which aggre- gated less than 600,000 shares. The buying of Hudson came largely from an overcrowded short interest. Other motors rallied in symapthy Trading in the general lis rather dull and featureless. | Tobacco stocks gave a fairly good demonstra: tion of group strength with the de-| + mand centering in American Tobacco and tobacco products each of which advanced about a point. Woolworth, Famous Pla: Gulf States Steel and Freeport Texas also recorded moderage gains. Oils were rather quiet dspite a further exten- ion of recent gasoline price advan- ces. Rails made little response to the publication of excellent traffic reports, Chicage and Alton preferred and Kansas City Southern being among the few issues to sell a point or more above yesterday's final quo- tations, loney was in plentiful supply, but ‘the call money rate was unchangéd at per cent, with that figure again shaded” in the out market, Foreign exchanges <displayed a firm undertone with French and Bel- gian francs well supported around the three cent level. A rise in call money to four per cent upon the calling of $30,000,000 8, later caused prices to ease off slightly from their high lev- els. The clan ie was firm.
