G. Sorlie in an address to the agricultural committee of the stato bankers association at Fargo tomor- row, the executive said here today. At a conference late yesterday the state industrial commission, which has charge of the Bank of North Da- kota, gave tentative approval to a plan to make the state bank of great- er usefulness, in’ the state banking system. The chief reason for the decision was the fact that the state bank now! has a reserve of approximately $8,- 000,000, much of which is on deposit in banks outside the state. “This money should be kept at home,” Gov. Sorlie, who is also a member of the industrial commission, said. “It showld be put to work in de- veloping the state and this can best be done by parceling it out to state; bangs.” | Smaller Banks to Benefit Although the details of the condi- tions on which the money will be de: posited in ‘banks by the Bank of ‘orth Dakota have not been definite- determined, the plan generally fa- vored is to have the state bank de posit the money with the smaller banks, taking in return an interest bearing credit deposit slip returnable in six or twelve months Ample security would be required | from the smaller banks to make sure that the state would not lose the money so deposited. One require- ment would be that the banks keep on deposit with the Bank of North Dakota collateral security to the amount of one and one-half times the total deposit by the Bank of North Dakota. Surety bonds also probably will be required to prevent; the possible recurrence of the condi- j tion which resulted several years ago when numerous banks failed and the Bank of North Dakota lost some of| the money it had on deposit with the closed banks. . Must Meet Certain Conditions The amount to be deposited in bank would be determined by the c ital stock, the state refusing to de- in any bank an amount greater, : would be re-| ‘quired to meet certain conditions to be laid down by the Bank of North Dakota before the state money is de- posited with it, | The Bank of North Dakota would; benefit by the plan, members of the! industrial commission felt, because of the low rate of interest which it: now is receiving on its $8,000,000 surplus. wa Strong Banks Used Although the state bank was o: inally operated on the basis of mak- ing deposits in small ban! favorable experience of several years ago caused the bank management to curtail ‘ts operations in the field.
