Bar Gand ads ; the cor WEDNESDAY, MAY CHILD HARMED BY INDUCTION OF FRIGHT Fear Brought Into Lives of 37 Per Cent of Children of America Chicago, May 13.—Parents, rela- tives and teachers, by means of threats, unsuitable stories or through ion of their own fears, bring fe into the lives of at least 87 percent of the children of Am- erica, the National Kindergarten and Elementary College here has deter- mined from a questionnaire answer- ed by 277 of the students. Where fear was not attributed to the home, it was usually supplied by playmates and practical jokers or by too close contact with the forces of nature, according to the college, which blamed 51 percent of the cases of fear on these sources. Eleven percent were unable to recall the cause Of their outstanding fear, and only a little over 1 percent could remember no fear at all. The list of fears included vir- tually everything that entered into the life of the child, with the gen- exception ef members of his The fear of darkness rank- ed first, Animals, insects, gypsies, fire, punishment, burglars, false faces, cannibals, teachers, parents and doctors were causes of fear to others. “Less than 10 percent of these fears could reasonably be considered of value to the child as a protection against danger,” said the college. Phe remaining 90 percent are worse than valueless, they are a menace to the mental, moral, physical and social development of the child. Their ef- fect is not limited to childhood, for more than half of these college stu- dents admitted they never had been able entirely to overcome these fears. Normal fears, better termed ‘rea- sonable caution,’ the usefulness and necessity for which have been care- fully explained or demonstrated to the child, do not leave this indelible stain.” The questionnaire also asked for tions as to the prevention of fe: and first on the list was the advice that the child should never be frightened, either in fun or in order to secure obedience that adults keep their fears to themselves and stop using the child as a safety valve; that they learn to control the child by other means that switch- es or darkness, and that they keep the child from the fearful or horri- ble element in stories, either of fic- tion or of real life. family sug 4 EGGS SOLD _ FOR A CENT 65 YEARS: AGO Washington, May 13.—Department of Agriculture experts, in hunting down data for a statistical compil- ation of the price range on agricul- tural products during the past 100 years, have come across some aston- ishing exhibits of the low cost of foodstuffs in bygone years. It is a matter of record that Caleb Hitchcock, a merchant of Perry coun- ty, Ohio, purchased from Holten Ma- jors, a farmer, 35 dozen eggs at three cents a dozen, and sold to him two gallons of whiskey at 25 cents a gallon. But this happened in 1860. The records further show that Hugh Manney, of Lake City, Missis- sippi, in 1848 sold 98 pounds of raw cotton at 8% cents a pound. In 1860 corn in Minnesota sold for 30c a bushel, and wheat for 75¢ a bushel. In 1846 in Chester county, Ill., ham sold for 7c a pound, beef 2% a’ pound and stove wood $1 a cord. In 1848 in Charles county, Mary- land, two pounds of chewing tobacco sold for thirty cents. In 1834 in Cleveland, Ohio, corn sold for frém 15¢ to 20c a bushel and wheat from B0e to 60c. During the same year in Morgan county, Ill., cows sold for from $10 to $20 and live hogs at two cents a pound. Minister’s Wife At Cooperstown Dies In Fargo Fargo, N. D., May 13.—Mrs. K. P. Wuflestad, wife of Rev. Mr. Wufle- stad, pastor of the Evangelical Free church of Cooperstown; N. D., died ix a Fargo hospital ,yesterday follow- ing an illness since Sunday morn- ing. Mrs, Wuflestad was born in Chi- cago, May 17, 1885, and spent a great deal of her life there. She spent over 20 years in Y. M. C. A. work, as secretary of Y. M. C. A, colleges at Chicago and New York City. She was married May 17, last year at Williamsday, Wis., and came to North Dakota shortly after. Surviving are four brothers, Har- vey Thompson, DeKalb, Ill; Robert Thompson, Chicago; Elwood Thomp- son,-Camden, N.-J.; and William Thompson, Springfield, Mass. The body will be taken to Chicago where funeral services will be held the latter part of the week.
