PAGE EIGHT JAPAN NAVAL ABILITY NOT RATED HIGH Experts Haye Little Regard | For Niponese as Sailors | and Sea Fighters BY CHARLES P, STEWART NEA Service Writer Washington, May 9.—Militarists,! who abound here, are all excited! over reports that Japan's reply to! the United States’ Hawaiian naval) maneuvers is to be a set of maneuy-| ers of her own, to show how easily she could beat such a fleet as this country's--of course in Far Eastern} waters, It isn’t likely the Japanese think} they could defeat America anywhere in the vicinity of the latter's home shores. Possibly they n't think they can defeat her at all That idea may be merely a complex some people have got. The expected Japanese maneuv are said to be scheduled for May This makes the Washington militar ists’ complex worse. This craft's sister ship, which preceded her, was built in England. Her Japanese owners tried her out satisfactorily. Then they told the, English builders they wanted anoth- er boat but would like to examine the plans first, with a view to pos- sible modifications. Sure enough, the new vessel was a Japanese product. Launching day arrived. The ship slid down the ways, hit the water and instantly turned bottom side up. WINTER WHEAT YIELD CUT IN FEDERAL REPORT (Ry The Associated Press) Washington, May 9.—A winter wheat crop almost one quarter smaller than last year’s production was forecast yesterday by the de- partment of agriculture, which plac- ed the total at 444,833,000 bushels. More than one-fifth of the area sown last fall was abandoned be- cause of heavy winter killing due fi a him largely to unfavorable dry weather for seeding, germination and early growth. The abandoned area, amount- ing to 9,604,000 acres, has ‘been ex- ceeded in only 1 year during the period coyered by the government's records, which extend back to 1904. The are left to be harvested is about 32,813,000 acres. The condition of the crop has im- proved since April 1, but on May 1 it was 8.2 points below the average on that date for the last 10 years. The conditions indicate an acre yield of approximately 13.6 bushels,*com- pared with a ten years acreage of 14.9 bushels. The tinal outturn of the crop, the department pointed out, may be larger or smaller than the forecast, as developments during the remainder of the season prove more or less favorable to the crop than usual, ELECTRIC COOKERY MEANS COOKING IN COMFORT at this Value 715 All prices f. 0. b.
