SCENES Course of Rivers Is Traced by Fleating Bobs Dropped in Sink Holes < Tallahass Fla., Sept. 19.—The traveler in West Florida, unfamiliar with the scenery of that section, should prepare himself for some cuy- ious freaks'@f nature. ' Otherwise he may waster unneces: time grop- ing for an explanation of the strange behavior of: three of the state’s riv- ers,” The old.pea and whelt game ex- ssion, “Now yow See it and now yeu don’t,” applies to parts of all of them. ‘ A description of these streams has been written by W. A, McRae, com: missioner of agriculture, who quotes a young man who has spent his life on the banks of the waterways. The substance of it follows: The Wacissa rises in “Beautiful Tallahassee - Southeastern railroad, not far from the state capital, and flows due south to within three miles of the Aucilla river, where it disap- pears in the Aucilla. Logmen have cut @ small cana] from the point of disappearance to the Aucilla. Rises In. Georgia. The Aucilla rises in Georgia ana flows in a southwesterly directign, forming the eastern boundary of Jef- ferson county, Florida. About three miles south of where the Tallahas- seé-Southeastern forms a junction with this river, the Aucilla sinks and runs under-ground in a winning way for possibly 12 miles, rising about three miles north of, where the Wa- cissa comes into it from below the earth, - The course of the river is traced by sink-holes, and it can be seen plainly. As proof of this, an object dropped into the stream where it first sinks is seen to rise and pass through the various sinks to the point 12 miles below where it finally comes to the surface, The St. Marks, the third of the “sunken rivers,” is a few miles to the west of the Wacissa and Aucilla. It also sMR¥j pid Fises- again a short distance away, making Florida’s “Nat- ural Bridge.” At this pofnt_one of Call at 818 Avé. B. or Phone 632M. 9-15-1w FOR SALE—Hupmobile touring 5 passenger. An interesting story is told about, Major Stephenson at this time, to the effect, that after tte had com- pleted the ritual for establishment of the initial post he-was unable to find any printers who has served in the war, to set it in type. After a prolonged search, however, he secured the services of Isaac Col- trin and Joseph Prior, two Decatur veterans, who put the ritual to press, and as a reward for their services were inductéd into the body as char- ter constituents. Original minutes of the first ses- sion are preserved in a local bank vault here where each year throng many of the thinning ranks as to a Mecca for veneration. \ The new order following its foun- dation grew by leaps and bounds and soon become 2 most powerful influ- ence on the nation, Major Stephenson, unhappily, was not privileged to witness fruition of his work.
