4 S a od TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1922 TIQUOR LAW VIOLATIONS — CHARGED FOUR Arrests Are Made a8 Result Of Investigation by Burns Detectives Four men were arrested late yes; terday and arraigned befor& Police Magistrate Cashman ‘last night. on charges of violation of the state li- quor’ laws, the arrests being made, according to States Attorney, on evi- dence supplied by two detectives from the Burns agency at Minnea- polis who are employed by Attorney- General Sveinbjorn Johnson, and evi- dence disclosed in questioning of about 25 people called to appear in the Attorney-General’s office yester- ; day. Under the state law the states attorney or attorney-gencral has in- quisitorial powers similar'to a grant jury, and may call in witnesses to testify under. oath, The men arrested are: Jack Ben- nett, charged with unlawful selling of liquor; Walter Carter, charged with unlawful selling; George Hanlon and Wm. Gabel charged with maintain- ing a common. nvisance. Two other warfants have been is- sued but the defendants have not been arrested. Authorities today corrected an im- pression growing out of rumors that there had been raids pulled off early yesterday morning. “There was no raid,” said States Attorney McCurdy, “and the, fact that people were called to testify |, should nét be considered as any re- flection upon them. Some of the best people in the city were called, people who may have been: sitting in an automobile on the street and seen certain persons go into certain pla- ces, or come into the-possession of similar information. . “The people were not called from any one place and the arrests were not the result of any one incident, but the evidence sought was the re- sult of a month’s investigation by the Burns detectives covering num- erous places and incidents.” ————— CITY NEWS | o—_—_—____-—_ Baby Boy.
