y ™ THURSDAY, SPTEMBER 21, 1922 POWERS SEEK TO) ix Township One Hundred Forty- Report of the Condition of FAMOUS and Mrs. ©. C. Coulter of Mallory |'states revenue cutter Newberry to- PLACATE TURK LEADER (Continued from Page One) . Interviewed by the Associated Press today, Dr. Post said: i “It i sregrettable allied ships did not do more in salvaging human life. The work of all \ae vessels on the night of the fire was magnificent but on the succeeding days when the im- | 1922, pulse of the great disaster disap- peared to a slow lull in the energy and. spirit. “If we hadkept up the work there would now be no evacua- tion problem and thousands would have been saved wiich might other- wise be deported ur killed. Even be- fore the fire broke there was indis- criminate killing, and iooting. There are so many bodies in the street; that I had, on one occasion, to alight from my automoble to life the corpse out of the path of the car.” NOT IN DANGER Paris, Sept. 21.—There is/no ques- tion of the immediate withdrawal of the British troops from Chanak on the Asiatie side of the Straights of the Dardanelles, was authoritatively stated in British official circles here today. The latest reports received in British quarters from the Near East indicate that the ‘British are not in danger of attack in their present position and there are indi- cations that the soldiers will re- main in Chanak penaing the peace conference. Mustapha Kemal Pasha is now faced. with two distinct parties in his government, the one warlike, demanding the immediate occupation of Thrace, and the other pacific and willing to remain in the present Tur- kish Nationalist positons in Asia Minor until the conference settles the peace terms. The British quar- ters to which this information comes believes that Kemal is supporting the pacific members of the govern- ment and will be able to hold the army in check, SUMMON PEACE CONFERENCE Paris, Sept. 21—The Allied pow- ers are agreed upon the quick sum- rioning of a peace conference to settle the Turkish problem, but the! basis of negotations ‘acceptable to| 4, the Angora government is still to be found. \ It was principally to ledrn this that the entente statesmen adjourn- ed their conversations until Friday and today efforts are going forward to obtain the Turkish view. The peace conference is expected to! open within three weeks, proba- bly at Rome or Venice with daegates present representing Great Britain, | France, Italy, Japan, Turkey, Greece, Rumania and Jugo Slavia. UTTERS WARNING London, Sept. 21.—Grave warning of disaster to come unless Great Britain and France act in concert in the Near East is uttered by Vis- count Grey of Fallodon, former se- eretary for foreign affairs. In a let- ter to the TIMES he denounces the British governments’s attitude as} announced last Saturday, regarding the permanent freedom of the Dar- danelles-as..a terrible-mistake; “the reply which has been the with-, drwwal of the French flag from} Chanak.” “If our mistakes prove fatal to France-British co-operation,” he writes, “the consequences may be more dsastrous than thought can measure or words express.” ISSUES COMMUNIQUE Constantnople, Sept. 2t—General Harington of the British army as the general officer in chief command of the Allied forces has issued a com- munique in which he declares that responsiblity for the consequences ef violations of the neutral zone will fall upon the authors of such violations. . \ (By the Associated Press) Rome, Sept. 21.—Italy officially in- formed Rumania today that she will not permit any action by Bulgaria that would change the present status quota in the Balkans and is ready, if necessary to take recourse to mil- itary measures, DETACHMENTS WITHDRAWN. Constantinople, Sept. 21. — The} French and Italian detachments and | flags werd? witherawn today from the neutral zones of Asmid and the | Dardanelles on orders from the re- spective governments. TOMMIES HOLD. LINES Constantinople, Sept. 21.—The | lines are now held exclusively by | British troops, supported -by the. combined Atlantic and Mediterrean | flects. In the meantime the Kem-| alis anguard is reported to have | reached the neutral zone of the Dar- | danellos. The next few hours will) show whether the Kemalists con- | templete acticn. APPROPRIATE $200,000 | Washington, Sept. 21.—An appro- | priation of $200,000 for relief of | Americans in Smyrna, recommended yesterday by President Harding, was voted today by the Senate.
