Press) New York, Sept. . 11. xtensive buying of equipment shar from out of town points featured the firm opening of-today’s stock market. Nearly a score of shares were push- ed up to new high records for the year in the first half hour of trad~ ing, some of the leaders being Atla! tic Coast. Line, Soo, Union Pacific, Missouri Pacifit, preferred, ‘Illinois Central, common and . preferred, Baldwin, American Locomotive, Am- erican Brake Shoe, Railway «Steel Spring, Hupp Motors, Mack Trucks, Austin Nichols and United Retail Stores, all at gains of Jarg@fractions to 3% points. Mexican Petroleum and’ Standard Oil of California also were strong but General Asphalt was re- actionary, declining more than, two points. Other weak spots were Am- erican Tobacco, Public Service of New Jersey, National Lead, American Hide and Leather, preferred, Chand- ler Motors, Consolidated Gas and Postum Cereal, which fell back small fractions to 1% points. ‘ Profit taking and professional sell- ing pressure, after an early display of strength, caused a confused price movement throughout the morning. The éffect of the selling was modi- fied somewhat, by the continued quiry for equipment, steel and some of ine motor accessory shares and specialties. The buying power dis- appeared to a large extent. in the foreign oil group, Mexican Petrole: um dropping more than two points with Genera] Asphalt, Common and preferred, Union Pacific, Delaware and Hudson, American Snuff, United Drug, Studebaker, American Ice and General American Ice and General American Tank also were reaction- ary, the declines ranging from 10 to 7 points. Gains of 2 to nearly five points, however, were recordéd by. Pullman, Fisher Body, Cosden Oil, preferred, National Biscu Fowder, Allis Chalmers, preferred, Sears-Roebuck and Reynolds. Tobac- co. Cal] money opened and renewed at four percent. A rise in United States Steel to 106, the highest. of the) year, was an incentive to active buying of the steel group generally and of other well known shares, causing a rapid upturn in prices after midday, Gains of 2 to 4 points were established by many issues, with the’ demand cent- ering largely in_ the class. American, Woolen, New York, Chicago and St. Louis, Maxwell Mo- tors, A, Fisher Body Kelsey Wheel, Pressed Steel Car,. preferred, Austin Nichols, preferred, Standard on of New Jersey, Republic Steel, preferred, Consolidated Gas‘and Ai erican Steel Foundries were in the van of the afternoon advance. Spirited bidding for special stocks continued to exert a stimulating in- fluence on the balance of the li Investment rails were in good di mand in the final hour, Union’ Paci- fic, New York Central and Northern Pacific each moving up more than a point. Relaxation of selling pressure also became evident in the oil group. Jersey Central shot up nearly ‘ten points while gains of 2'to 2% postits were made by New Orleans, Texas and Mexico, Woolworth, May Depart- ment Stores, Eastman Kodak — and * Further improvement in the in- dustria] situation was reflected in the heavy accumulation of buying orders in today’s. stock market, ‘ which sent more than, a score. of Open: High. yLewe, Clot: .
