/BENERIT FUNDS ‘APPROACHING “DAY OF FATE German Social Insurarice Is Face to Face With Hard Times Berlin, Aug. 8—Medical — treat- ment costs 20 times more in Ger- many today than it did before the war, declares. Dr. Heinrich Brauns, Gérman Minister of Labor, writing in the current number of Recon- struction. Dr. Brauns calls atten- tion to this increase in connection with the critical situation which, hé says, prevails in Germany's social in- surance. Although so far the directors of the sick funds have been successful in maintaining the payment of the benefits, the funds are “approaching their day of fate.” Medicines cost, on an average, 25 times the pre-war figure, while in 1914 a charge of three’ marks was made for a day’s hospital treatment, which now costs 100 marks. “According to the minister's statis- ties, 16,000,000 employes are insured under the German Invalidity Insur- |‘ ance system, and 1,600,000 under the Private Employes Insurance. The Sickness Insurance grants to workmen, domestic servants, and. clerks, whose annual earnings fo not exceed..a certain limit, cash pay- mentg=:apd benefits in kind. The funds responsible for the payment of these benefits are kept'up’ by the con- tributions of the insured persons and of:the employers. | 4 \ ee Accident and Invalidity’ insurance algo are provdied. These, however, as:well as the sickness insurance, are being operated. today with a great deal of difficulty and highly unsatis- factory results, owing largely to, the deprqciation in the value of the’ mark. “It will depend on the value of the mark and on the labor market,” the Minister concludesy “as, to whether the sick, the disabled and the Inva- lids can,be protected against further misery.” ROUGH WAVES. . KEEP SAILORS ‘ FROM VESSEES Chicago, Aug. 8—Oné hundred bluejackets from the ‘gunboat Wil- mette, Dubuque, Paducah and Gopher of the Great Lakes training ficet, who were marooned ashore last night when high seas in the otiter harbor made it impossible’ for the fleet’s motor tenders to operate, returned to their ships today. The fleet has been anchored off the Municipal pier, dur- ing.the Pageant of Progress., During the-night the flagship Wilmette which waa lying close tu the pier put to, sea-and did not return until the storm abated this morning. Nearly half. of the sailors on shore leave spent the night in a police station after police communicated with the Paducah by wireless arid were told by Captain Guy L. Eaton, the com- mander, that it would be suicidal for the men to try to reach the ships. NOT GUILTY, ~-STRIKER’S PLEA Fargo, N.
