PAGE EIGHT MANY PUPILS ATTEND ONE ROOM SCHOOLS There Are 4,335 of These Schools in N. D., with Attendance of 74,656 HAVE 4,552 TEACHERS The place the one room school has in the educational life of North Da- kota is vividly portrayed in the sta- tistics of the school year 1920-21 now being prepared for the biennial re port. At the end of the school year in 1921, North Dakota had 6,507 schoo! 4,355 were one-room schools. 2 chool year under consider- tion, 6 children attended the public schools, of this number 74,656 were in one-room buildings. It way here also that the greatest loss tc the taxpayers of the state came also because weither conditions and roads reduced the daily average attendance in the one room school houses tc 54,055, or on an average of 20,601 for every day of the eight-month term With the average attendance in the one-room schools at 17 each the re sult would be the same if 1,200 of the one-room. schools were heated, light ed when necessary anda teacher sup- plied, but not one student answered the call of the bell. Teachers are ‘supplied liberally for these one-room schools, 4,522 being reported for the 4,335 schools. These teachers on an.average teach but eight months in a year and receive for this teaching an average oi $102.50 per month. The ayerage yearly salary of these one-roon: school teachers, therefore is $820, \te pay the expenses of a year and the six to twelve weeks of summer schoo! that is now considered a necessity for advancement ,and ability ‘to ad vance to a higher position in the teaching world. Seventeen of the teachers of the one-room schools for the year under consideration were ‘college graduates, One hundred and twenty more held diplomas from a normal school. Higt school graduation had been reached by 2,876 and the educational statis- tics for the remaining 1,509 is not given but is presumed to be lowe) than high school graduation. One hundred and twenty-one 0} these teachers held professiona: teaching certificates, 1,311 held first grade certifcates and 2,894 held sec nd grade certificates. , ° The completed work of the one room schools for the year 1920-21 was 3,115 eight grade graduates, ¢ fifth of all the graduates of the year. Many of the women who were nianufacturing chapeaus had bought no new ones for five or six years, she added, Sometimes old material is used, sometimes new and the hat can be made in any color desired to go'with a particular suit.” In general great interest is show: ‘in making of cfothes and in problem: oftcolor and design. On@af{ the points the workers are stressing is that different kinds of clothes are Particularly” adapted to different types—notebly to short and stout or to tall and thin wome@f. A slender woman can.do mich to make that fact less notteedble by wearing a round ruffled collar on her dress and by having flounces that run around rather then up and down. A stout one can—lodk more slender by the use of up ang down effects and V neck dresses and-by a coiffure that- also runs’ in vertical lines. Color harmony: — elimination of colors “that swear at you”—is an- other subject which the home dem- onstration workers and many of the women of the state are studying to: gether.» These matters of color and line apply to home decoration as well as to personal adornment. The same vertical lines that. render|/ stoutness less visible will make'a low room seem higher while the, color harmony “principles that apply to clothes and hats also apply to the home.
