OTTO HUE WAS “THE MAN OF THE PEOPLE” His Death a Distinct Loss To Working Men of Ger- ‘ many OF UNDAUNTED COURAGE ssen, Germany, May 26.—Otto Hue, whose death occurred here re- ‘cently was the recognized leader of the coal miners’ and iron workers’ trade ‘unions, whose memberships runs into millions. Lean and active, with his drooping red mustache and’ his slouch hat he looked more like a Sunday school in- spector than the leader of a great party. ‘He was a Social Democratic member of the Reichstag, the Pruss- ian Diet and the Economic Parlia- ment. He represented labor on the Ger- man delegation to the Spa conference, and it was mainly through his instru- mentality that the stipulated coal de- liveries to the Entente were upheld, He skowed his breadth of mind on this occasion by taking his stand side by side with Stinnes, the great coal magnate, to whom he was on almiost every other point mortally opposed, but as he himeelf said, fire and. water were for once working toward the same end. ‘Hue always remained’ the man of the people. He preferred to speak low Gernian, thus endearing himself to the mining population. Once after addressing a miners’ meeting, he sat down on the platform, took a fiour- pound country loaf and an enormous miner’s knife out of his pocket and calmly munched slice after slice to the huge delight of the ‘spectators, “He is one of us,” they said. Hue was a man of undaunted cour- age. In “1920, during the Red dis- turbances in the Ruhr district, a price was put on his head, for he was a noted anti-Bolshevist, and he was vir- tually. compelled to leave Essen. He was gone for just six hours, after which he returned, showed himself on the streets, and finally went to ‘the very headquarters of the Reds and ex- pressed himself fully concerning’ their activities. He remained in Essen and kept the German government inform- ed of the Red movements, even when he was obliged to incriminate his per- sonal friends. The weight which Hue carried in labor councils insured his selection as a member of the German delega- tion to the Genoa conference, but he remained behind, stricken with in- flammation of the lungs, which took a fatal course.
