Amelita could play the piano when she was flour years old, and she got her earliest inspiration from Mascagni who urgéd her to study hard, She fol- lowed the composer’s advice and at sixteen she was a prize winner at the (Milan Conservatory. At this time the family met with business reverses and Amelita had to give piano lessons : to keep the wolf from the door. It was found that she had a voice, and{ Mascagni again advised her to study to become an opera singer. “I had no teacher,” says Galli-Curci when she} recalls those days. “I learned to sing with the aid of the piano and the birds.” * Shortly after, the family extricated itself from finartcial difficulty, and Amelita went tio Rome to try her for- tune in opera. After many a setback she was engaged to substitute for a singer as “Gilda” in “Rigole‘to” at the Constanzi Opera House. She made a very successful debut, and obtained a a@ three year contract at the smali sum of $6.25 a performance. ‘New York had its first chance to hear Galli-Curci on January 28, 1918, in “Dinorah” at the Lexington Opera ‘House, There is scarcely need to re- call the sensation that she created. New York, Chicago, Boston and other cities heard the incomparabl2 artist in “Rigoletto,” “Lucia,” “Traviata,” “Barber of ‘Seville,” “Dinorah,” “Ro- meo and Juliet,” and practically every city in‘the United States has heard Galli-Curci) in concert.
