Social and Personal HOW THE NEWS IS SPREAD ‘ The Business and Professional Wo- men of. Bismarck were honored in a very special manner last evening when Mr. W..G. Stevenson, Associat- ed Press representative in Bismarck, told the story of how the great news organizations of the country serve the public in disseminating the news of the world. Mr. Stevenson spoke fcr an ‘hour and graciously continued his discus- sion in answer to numberless ques- tions on the part of his hearers after closing his formal address with read- ing exgerpts from the now famous story of Kirk) Simpson on the burial of our unknown dead at the recent ceremony in Washington, Mr. Steven- son concurring in the expressed opin- icon of the leading journalists of the country that Mr. Simpson’s serics of stories on this incident was the high- est form of development in the fine art of newspaper writing. Benefit Picture { The Women's Community Council wish to. express their appreciation and gratitude to the delegates of the “ splendid work in the sile of tickets E for the’ “Heart of ‘Maryland” which was shown at the Capitol theater for the ‘benefit of the under nourished children of Bismarck. The couneil also wish to thank Mr. Wingrcene of the Capitol theater for his splendid co-operation and gener- ous help. The Eastern Star sold 130 tickets, Mrs. Middlemas selling 64 of that number. Mrs. Scott of the Meth- odist Aid sold 56 and Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Keller of, the Baptist Aid sold 100. Other delegates did splendid work also. Six hundred and seventy- five tickets were sold. The complete proceeds cannot be ‘announced as the entire results are not yet in. ASH WEDNESDAY USHERED IN. At a solemn service read by Rt. Rev. Bishop Wehrle and Father M. Hiltner at St. Mary’s church this morning, the Lenten season was entered into by ‘the congregation. The ancient custom of penitents approaching fo: sprinkling of ashes upon their heads was observed. This custom has come down from the early centuries of the church when penitents appeared be- fore the public, arrayed in mourning garments (sack cloth) and were sprinkled with ashes, reminding them of the words used at the expulsion of our first parents from the garden of Eden because of sin “Dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return.” The girls’. choir sang the mass, and Bishop Wehrle.spoke on: the renuncia- tion of world pleasures as special training for soul and bedy in the fight for the better life. ENTERTAIN MANDAN LADIES. Mrs. Frank Barnes and Mrs. E. J. Schultz entertained the Royal .Neigh- bors of Mandan at the home of Mrs. Schultz on 511 Second street last eve- ning. An elaborate four course din- ner was served at 6:30 o’clock at lit: tle tables which had been attractive- ly decorated in keeping with Wash- ington’s birthday. Covers were laid for twenty-four. Following the din- ner a pleasant evening was spent playing whist at which Mrs. J. I. Ro- vig of Mandan ‘won the prize for the highest score. SOCIETY WILL MEET. The Society of the Friends of Our Native Wild Life will meet in the English room at the high school on Thursday evening, March 2 at 8 o'clock P. M. “An entertaining pro- gram has been arranged for the meet- ing. Miss, Bertha Burton will give a paper on “John Burroughs,” John Dingle ‘will give a paper on “Audu- bon,” ‘and Charles Hoffman will give a talk on “Thoreau.” ENTERTAIN AT LUNCHEON. Mrs. F. A. Lahr and Mrs. P. R. Fields entertained the members of the Tuesday Bridge club at the home ot Mrs., Lahr, 68 Avenue, B, at a one o’clock luncheon yesterday. Mrs. A.'M. Christianson won the high score at bridge, the diversion of the afver- noon. Mrs. Clark cf Los Angeles California, was an out of tcwn guest. FIRST DIVISION MEETS. The First Division of St. Mary's Sewing Circle will meet at the school auditorium on Thudsday afternoon. Thore will be election of officers and Pe an attendance of all members is de- sired. RETURNS FROM SCHOOL. Miss Florence Homan has returned from Minneapolis, Minn., where she has been attending the University of Minnesota. Miss Homan plans to visit at her home here for some time. LENTEN SERVICE IS HELD TODAY Mark Beginning of Season Which Continues Until - Easter Today is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of Lent.’ Special serv- ices will be held in various churches of the city during the Lenten season which lasts until Easter Sunday, April, 16th. There will be no mission service: at St. George’s Episcopal church this evening on account of the illness of the rector. After this week it is ex- pected that services will be held every Wednesday evening. Special sub- jects in keeping with Lent will be taken up in the meetings on Sunday. This morning at 9 o'clock the members of St. Mary’s church began their devotions for the Lenten season. Blessing and distribution of. ashes took place this morning. Every Wed- nesday, Friday and Sunday evenings there will be devotions at the stations. Sermons throughout Lent will be on Lenten subjects.
