~~ ESDAY, DECEMBER 13 Social and Personal ANTI-ILLITERACY CAMPAIGN BEGUN Local Women ‘Take Active In- terest in Work in Bismarck and Burleigh County Mrs, Alfred Zuger, representing wo men’s clubs.of North Dakota on the State Illiteracy commission is maii- ing to the various clubs in the state a letter in connection with the anti- illiteracy work. ‘The ‘school teachers and club women have been mentjoned as the two largest forces in the state who can fight illiteracy unitedly and in her, letter Mrs. Zuger asks the as- sistanda' and cooperation of all the clubs. One paragraph of the letter, which is addressed to the club members says: “The part that has been~as- signed to the club women. of state in theilliteracy campaign is a very large and honorable one. Let us/ see that we measure up t) it, if pos- sible, that we out-rank even the teach- ers themselves in the actual accom- plishment of redeeming illiterates.” The program drawn up for the cam- paigsn consists of five points: 1, Agitation—Talk against illiter- acy everywhere, day and night at club meetings, social functions and else where. -Have two of the club pro- grams on illiteracy this: year, even if; something else must be abandoned. 2.—Public Addresses—Choose _illit- eracy as your subject when you have @ speech to make, and see that illit- eracy is on every program given in your community. 3. Teaching Illiterates — Every club woman should try. to teach one, some can teach a class. If the illiter- ates will not come to you, go to them Teach them somehow. You can se- cure a beginner's school outfit, Maon- light school reader and tablet with pencil for fifty cents, which covers cost and postage. A stock of these have been placed with me to supply club women who wish to teach. 4. Providing Books—Club women can/aid the superintendent and teach- ers wonderfully by raising and putting at their disposal a fund for books for illiterates. A tea or an entertainment should be given for this purpose. 6. Publicity—Have local papers publish illiteracy statistics of coun. ties, showing rank pf your own coun- ty, also, secure editorials on the sub- ject, 1 Last evening Mrs. Zuger and State ‘Superintendent of Public Instruction Minnie J. Nelson, visited the night school classes at the state peniten- tiary.
