S. Johnson, general manager of | the Des Lacs Western Oil Company of Minot, has been in the city a por- tion of this week looking after busi- ness matters pertaining to his ccm- pany. -In a conversation with The ‘Tribune reporter Mr. Johnson ex- foot well. The sand they are in now bids fair to be quite thick and should bring a great producer. The last 1,- 000 feet in the well has shown up strong in fossil formations and oil bearing shale. The shale could have been. mined and treated. with. the. re- | sult that a heavy yield of: shale, oil would lave been produced. ‘ The temperature in the bottom of | the well, according. to government tests is 123 degrees, practically the same ag the wells in the Texas and! Oklahoma fields test, while the Penn- ; sYlvania and western oil wells do not | test as high in temperature. This is | a mighty good sign, according to/Mr.'| Johnson, as he states, all the large; producing wells in Texas and Oklaho- | ma hive a very high temperature. So | that the extreme depth of the Des Lacs well is the deepest well that has ! been drilled in the entire northwest. | Mr. Johnson is ‘very confident of the future of the Des Lacs Western Oil Company, which is a North Da- | kota corporation, officered by North | Dakota people. They have over 100,- | 000 acres’ of leases in North Dakota, | and also a large amount of acreage | in Montana under lease. | The drilling of the Des Lacs well is | really a pioneer moyement. So much , has been said and written about the | possibility of ofl being found in North | Dakota in paying commercial quanti- H ties, that it would seem that the only | right thing to do would be to complete the well and settle for all time the question of the truth of the statement that has been so oft repeated by men | who have had experience in matters of this kind. A large number of North Dakota people are interested in the project, not so much for the fortune that would-come with bringing in a producing oil well, but to satisfy themselves that we have oil in paying quantities within the state, thus pro- viding another great natural resource that will add wealth to the common- | wealth. | Mr. Johnson hag fer the past three , Years maintained that oil in paying quantities will be obtained from the western half of North Dakota and the eastern half of Montana. Recent dis- coveries in Montana seem to bear him out in this belief, and with the show- ing of oil in the Des Lacs well he feels more confident than ever that | North Dakota is cn the threshold of a pleasant surprise as regards oi] ; production.—Advertisement. | Spider, 9 inches amound and with legs 17 inches long, was found recent. , ly in ‘Sumatra. | pressed himself as highly pleased | with the progress thus far made in the deep well his company is drilling west of Deslacs in Ward County. He stated that the well is now: 3,924 feet deep, and that the big drill had en- countered the Dakota sands, that are always sought by. ofl well drillers as the source of he oil supply. Mr. John- son sates that the Dakota sands run from the Texas oil fields to the newly discovered oil fields within the Arctic circle. He believes that there is oil production in the well at the present time, but as to the amount of produc- tion he would not say, as there is 3,500 feet of water in the well. They now have a carload of pipe on the way, and just as soon as this arrives they are going to shut off the water and then drill forty or fifty feet into | the Dakota sands, if the heavy head of gas in the well will allow this. Mr. Johnson states that this is. the fifth strata of oii bearing sand that | the drill has encountered in the 3,924 THE -GISMARCK TRIBUNB ~ OPENING Of Our Toy Department The delight of little folks, opens Saturday.
