RIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, °21 CONFERENCE ON RAIL GROSSING DANGER CALLED State Railroad Commission Asks for Meetings to be Held in Bismarck, October 7 DANGER IS POINTED OUT A conference to consider ways and means of informing the public as to the danger of railroad crossings, and to determine. upon a uniform signal which will warn those traveling in au- tomobiles and other vehicles’ of ap- proaching trains has Friday, October 7, in 3: announced today by Frank Milholland, chairman of the state railroad coim- mission. i The announcement to officials of railroads operating in tie state and to the general public, foitows: “It ds an acknowledged fact that ali railroad ‘crossings are dangerous. Recognizing this fact, railroads oper- ating in the United States have adopt- ed various methods of warning the public as to the danger of cr railroad tracks without first taining whether or not a train w a proaching. Signs have been posted in. conspicuous places, belis and other| signals have been instalied,-gates have been built, yet the number of acci- dents appears to be increasing. There are those who. seem to utterly disre- gard any and all signais. The fact remains, however, that there are some crossings more dangerous than others, that many accidents cou!d be prevent- ed if signals. were installed, and it is apparent that some action must be taken by commissions, railroad officials and the general publi¢ which will re- duce the number of acc.dents. Resolution Adopted, “With this object in view, the Board of Railroad Commissioners has adopt- ed the following resolution. ISMARC THEATRE TONIGHT - and SATURADY The celebrated Star of Western Drama -BUCK JONES Supported by HELEN FERGUSON vc “Whereas, many [atal accidents have occurred at railway crossings in North Dakota within the past month, automobiles and wagons having been struck; by trains, resulting in most instances in the death of ‘the occu- pants ‘cf such vehicles; and , , “Whereas, statistics show that more speople are killed on ratiroads by ac- cidents of this nature thansby wrecks and all other railroad accidents, and that the number of such accidents ap- pears to be, increasing, and “Whereas, there are pending before this Commission several applications for signal bells or other appliances at crossings which will warn the peo- ple of approaching trains, therefore be it \ 5 “Resolved, by the Board of Railroad Commissioners oi the state of North Dakota, that a conference be held on Friday, October 7th, at 10 o'clock a. m., at the senate chambers of the state capitol in Bismarck and that, super- intendents and other road officials and the general public be invited to attend to discuss the relative merits of bell and other signals at railroad crossings, to the end Uiat accidents may be prevented.” OIL FEVER “SPREADING IN SOUTHWEST N.D. Lemmon, §. D., a little town across | the line, is one of the centers of the oil enthusiasm. The Lemmon Trib: une, in a 16-page issue, devotes a great deal of space to the oil boom. It shows a picture of a street corner dur- ing a sale of oil stock and it resem- bled a crowd around the most popular old-time medicine show. The streets of Lemmon were crowded with auto- mobiles during the period. A picture of Lemmon’s first oil derrick is shown: The Lemmon Tribune says: Lemmon As wild over the pnospects of drilling for oil in the near future and have made plans to celebrate the event in the good old Lemmon way.
