PAGE EIGHT ’ THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE STANDARDS OF > “FATTY’S” CUSTOM MA MORALS CHANGE, SAYS MINISTER’ Speaks at Conference in London on Present Day Attitude WAR TOPPLED IDEALS London, Sept. 16.—Moral standards! of the present day, changing from the! simple code of ‘our torefathers, are; “excrescences growing out of the! war,” declared the Rev. Dr. Elbert} Robb Zaring, editor of the Northwest- | ern Christian Advocate, Chicago, be-| fore the fifth Ecumenical Methodist Conference here today. “It is a pass-| ing ‘wave from which,’ he said, “we are slowly but surely e-.erging.” Dr. Zaring, in his address, referred to the pleasantry which passed be- tween a Chicago and a New York daily paper many pears ago when Chicago} was developing the sky-sctaping habil. Chicago twitted New York on the fact and the Herald of that city replied! there was no city on the Western Hem- isphere that needed its sky scraped worse than Chicago. “Since then scores of cities have gone into the sky-scraping business,” continued the speaker. “In the spiritual meaning of that term we must all scrape the sky to get a correct idea of moral stand- ards. “The true moral standard is un- changeable. It lies like a great snow. | capped mountain range acioss the hou! zon. It cannot change. This moral mountain range which has set the standard for all time sustaing thej{ same relation to the moral world that | the Himalayas do to the physical! earth. “Attempts have been made to sub- stitute, but to no avail. Every once in awhile you hear of a new set of commandments. Men ot different pro- febsions ‘have issued Ten Command- ments. T have read of ‘'en Command- ments for husbands, tor wives, for students and even schooi children. Re- visers have even gone into the field of the New Testament and proposed | Beatitudes different from those laid down by our Lord. All these attempts are tutile and insignificant compared to the mountain range formed by the first Ten Commandments let down out | of heaven through the medium of Moses. They cannot be improved up- on. “Our conception of moral standards is changing. We are today in the trough of a’ wave. The war upset everything, ‘toppled our moral as well as our Intellectual and physical stand- ards. We'have not recommenced to keep house. Thus there are certain retrogressions that are greatly deplor- ed and which some fancy are a per- manent lowering of the moral stand- ards, These are but excrescences growing out of the war. Such a hor- rible program as was projected upon the world could not but leave in its trail a sordid conception’ of morals. Thus. in the matter of family ties, of physical habits, of our amusements, we find people indulgins: as they have not done for many years past. “This is but a passing wave. Even now we are emerging therefrom. Our conception of the moral’ standard is lifting. One of the most hopeful phases of this develonment of a moral ideal is the application of the prin- ciple of Christianity to the great world of industry about us. There is no question but that we have a lar- ger outlook in this fleid than ever be- fore. “But the world has become compli- cated. There is no simplicity. Every- thing is interwoven, enmeshed. No man liveth to himself and no men School Teacher Needed Brains “TI never have had such a ‘God send’ come to me as when I took the first dose of May’s Wonderful Remedy. I way afraid I would have to give up my school ‘because of severe stomach, liver and bowel trouble which caused such a pressure of gas that I could not use my brain at times, and my heart would palpitate awfully. Since taking a treatment of Mayr’s Wonder- ful Remedy a year ago, all this has disappeared.” It is a simple, harm- less preparation that removes the catarrhal muscus from the intestinal tract and allays the inflammation which causes practically all stomach, liver ‘and intestinal aliments in- cluding appendicits. One dose will convince or money refunded. For sale at all druggists. 565 What is it? | DE “JOY? Once upon a time we did not care how a man made his money just 80 he distributed it properly. Now we are not so anxious about the distri bution of his money as how he made it, I have great hopes for the futur>. The moral standard is i:fting gradual- ly.
