Grin GLENDIVE ALSO BUILDS A POOL POR CITY USE Uses Bismarck Method of Volun- teer Subscriptions and Work to Provide Place MANY WIELDING SHOVELS Glendive, Mont., Aug. 5.—The lar- gest public swimming pool in the tate is now being constructed in Glendive. More remarkable still, it ig being built by volunteer labor and contributions of material and money. The city is wildly enthusiastic over the, pool and everybody is wielding shovel, running a tractor, directing a fresno or doing ‘his share to rush the work along. Last Friday evening, & mass meet- ing was held at the office of the Glen- dive Chamber of Commerce to deter- miné whether a swimming pool was wanted and to devise ways and means of securing the same. The meeting was presided over by John F. Mur- phy, president of the Glendive Cham- ber of Commerce, who issued the call for the same. Little time was wasted on the preliminaries, and soon after the purpose of the meeting was ex- plainéd, those present unanimously voiced their sentiments in favor of the ‘best kind of a swimming pool that could be constructed. It was also the congensus of opinion that the struc- ture should be built by volunteer e?- fort rather than by the creation of a park district and the sale of city bonds. Everyone wanted the pool at once and the latter plan meant de- lay; Soon the necessary committees were appointed and thé meeting re- solved itself into a donation party. N. P. Helps Out. The Northern Pacific Railway help- ed out largely with an‘offer of sand and gravel. Others offered trucks, wagons, teams, men, cement, engi- neering sérvice, piping and valves. Subscription blanks were quickly pre- pared ‘and soon filled out. Before the meeting adjourhed and within one hour’ and a half after it opened suf- ficient. was raised to assure those in charge that the project could be un- dertaken and work begun at once. The next afternoon, at a Joint meet- ing of the various committees, the _ kind of a swimming pool desired, was settled. And, on Sunday morning the work of excavating | was commenced.
