Some of them not appearing have ‘signified a willingness to appear when their cases are called. The investigation into alleged gam- bling, bribery and game throwing in major league baseball was opened officially in September, 1920, when Judge Charles A. McDonald, chief justice of the Criminal Courts, charg: ed the Cook county’ grand jury with looking into reports’ which had come to his attention concerning fixed games. The grand jury investigation which followed proved the most sensational in the sports history. It finally re- sulted in the indictment of eight members of the world’s champiens, Chicago White Sox, two former major league players, two alleged gamblers and a former world champion pugiiist ed, declared it was not ready to prose- cute, and when Judge William BE, De- ver refused a postponement, State's Attorney Robert E. Crowe declared | that there was “no game” and drop: | ped the cases against seven of the players. Judge Dever took the others ; off the court call. | The action of the state, however, ; proved to be 2 boomerang for, instead of making the end of the scandal, it proved really to be the beginning. Aj tew days later a new grand jury in- vestigation was started. Unlike the; first one, which was attended by blar- ; ing of trumpets which made all of the | testimony public, the second inquiry | was secret. President Ban Johnson | of the American league was the chief | witness aside from state’ officials who | read the testimony submitted to the } first hearing. i Cicotte told the grand jury his} $10,000 was given him before the series started. It was placed under his pillow, he said. Concerning the actual throwing of the games, the | pitcher confessed to only one deliber- ate misplay. He said he purposely hit Rath, the first man up in the first game, but then repented and after that played his best throughout the series. Cicotte talked to several of- | ficials before going to the grand jury chambers. ‘ These officials quoted him | as confessing to other misplays, but | the hitting of Rath was the only one | officially reported to the grand jury / by the pitcher, ‘President Charles A.
