WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1921 ~“HUMORESQUE” SHOWN IN CITY Moving Picture Which Has Won Greatest Praise of Critics Seen in Bismarck \ Pesta z IS A POWERFUL DRAMA “Humoresque” is'a great cinema. Bismarck pcople will nat have the opportunity of seeing another as! great in many a ‘day, that will match Fannie Hurst's drama of life now be- ing shown at the Eltinge theatre. “Humoresque” has been heralded in the largest cities of the country a: the greatest short story of the films. No longer than the usual picture, it leaves an impression that will not pass with the passing of the show. Seldom. is a picture greater, than the star; seldom is the theme more powerful than the staging, “Humor- esue” is a vivid story that rises even| above the cast perfectly chosen; the theme causes one to forget the me- chanics of the filming. “Humoresue,” as the name impli is a story built on a song, “a song that laughs at life and hides many a tear. Its origin is in the New York Ghetto, where millions of stoic immi- grants from Russia and other op- pressed lands have entered American life, perhaps have remained. Out of the slums of New k’s east side: where poverty and-misery abougd have sprung many a strong character who has left an imprint. Fannie Hurst, whose stories of the Ghetto have made her one of the greatest short story writers of the country, fs true to life when she takes a\Rus- ian Jew out of the slums and makes a great artist. Two Characteristics. There, are two outstanding charac- teristics ef the people she chose -whici are truly depicted throughout the pic. ture—faith and family pride. One of the large family, living in a tene- ment. answers the mother’s prayers. for he becomes a great musician. auite characteristic is the strong fam- ily tie that prevails as the youth ris to fame and riches. No less devoted is the genius to his mother when he moves into a Fifth avenue home than when in the slums. No less welcome are the brothers and sisters. Quite able is the love chapter of the y—the girl, too, rises from the same Ghetto. The first great tri- umph of the genius comes when he s before his own people after having appeared before foreign kings. hi a The second is when he tears up a Ni - Fannie Hurst’s beautiful story of a boy’s genius and a mother’s love. MORE PATHOS THAN “THE MUSIC MASTER” ‘MORE FUN THAN “POTASH AND PERLMUTTER“ Acclaimed a supreme ’ masterpiece of the screen by all who have seen it.
