Brin- ton, and Denies He’s in Al- liance With Him WAS TOWNLEY CHOICE Answering William Lemko’s letter in which he said he was, at the be- hest of the Governor, investigating the actions of William Langer, Attor- ney General, Mr. Langer replied to Lemke: “You have sufficient money, so 1 won't offer you any,” said Mr. Langer to Lemke in his letter. “But 1 offer the Governor a thousand dollars if you, or any other of his special assistants, will prove to the supreme court, four of whom were elected by your organ- ization, that I have ever done onc croocked act in my life.” Denying an allegiance with J. W. Brinton in the criminal libel case brought against him, Langer assnails Brinton for his acts while in the con- fidence of Townley and Lemke as an important factor in the league organ- ization. He refers to Brinton as “the man whom you and Townley sent out to organize the stores and who took over a million dollars of the ifarmers money for you to use” and '“who in spite of my protests to you. to Townley, and to Frazier, put ove’ the rotten newspaper graft law and collected hundreds of thousands of dollars more for you to control.” Mecs’ Resolution He refers to the resolution introd- duced in the legislature by Senator Fred Mees, charging that Brinton got 362,000 out of the league newspaper deals, and. says “the record in the senate shows that you and Townley protected (Brinton) from Senator Mees and refused to permit a commit- tee to be appointed to investigate him and his acitivities.” ) He charges that Brinton wag chosen by Townley to heckle him while he was making speeches against the aewspaper graft law and in defense of Miss Nielson, and says Brinton was ‘or yedrs “on the pay roll of either the league, your stores company or allied coricerns.” Mr. Langer declares to Lemke that 3rinton “is yours and Townley’s, not ny ‘patriot.’” “You in violation of your promises ‘o the farmers, are now seeking the Attorney Generalship,” says Langer to Lemke, and asks jf it is to prétect @ .J. Hagen, of the Scandinavian- American bank, or P. R, Sherman, cashier; or “to protect the railroad sompanies in the increase in freigat rates which your commission gave them last week?” 4 Standard Oil Case Continuing, he says, “It is because [ alone beat the Standard Oil com- pany by a decision of two to one, and because at a special session of the egislature, called by Frazier, the law was changed at their request. Uo you want them protected?” “Brinton attacks the Bank of North Dakota. He says that there was eni- yezzlement and misappropriation of funds there. He says that you and fownley know about it. This is crim- inal libel. If you men, who arezat the head of the, farmers organiga- sion, aren’t big.eniough to bring Brin- on up before the courts of this state, hen the people of this state have an Attorney General who isn’t afraid to do it—who is not scared of you and your lying newspapers.” He brands the charge of “frame-up” 4s _a cdwardly attack.
